Setting the Stage for Success

Stage Directions Inc. brings cutting-edge technology, smart production to events of all sizes

CultureMap Create
May 10, 2016 | 6:48 am

Stage Directions Inc. founder Richard Hoggatt has always been a bit of a maverick, looking ahead at what’s next, while perfecting the art of audio and video production, lighting, and staging. The Houston-based company has worked with an enviable roster of clients, creating memorable events for VH1, UNICEF, and powerful corporate clients, while still serving those seeking something special for weddings, parties, and charity events.

For almost 30 years, Hoggatt and his team of skilled creative talent have established Stage Directions Inc. as Houston’s most comprehensive production and staging company, which also creates inspired content with cutting-edge technology. When Stage Directions Inc. was formed in 1987, events were recorded on reel-to-reel video tape, now the company uses the highest quality digital files.

It’s an evolution that reminds Stage Directions Inc. operations manager Trent Blake just how far the company has come through the technological advances. The benefit of the ever-changing field means Stage Directions Inc. offers clients the very latest services for every occasion.

“Our scope is pretty large. If a client can dream it, we can do it,” Blake said. “We want to push boundaries and go beyond a basic stage setting or lighting. We want to create things with our clients.”

The list of just what Stage Directions Inc. can create is lengthy, giving clients plenty of options. LED video walls, video mapping, high-quality live streaming from iPhones, and webcasting are among the services available. Think HD everything, full custom lighting shows, expert audio, and a fully designed show from top to bottom, but Blake said the service menu doesn’t end there.

“We speak production language,” Blake said. “We are a one-stop shop, so not only can we do the audio/visual, but also can provide the content and do it for less.”

The cost-savings benefit is one element, but technologically speaking, when Stage Directions Inc. is running the whole show, every piece of equipment speaks and understands each other, alleviating the risk of any hiccups along the way.

While building Stage Directions Inc., Hoggatt also became a distributor for multiple companies such as QSC Audio, Elation Lighting, and EIKI Projection, which eliminated the cost of the middle man, keeping the budget affordable for clients. Hoggatt believes in cultivating relationships in all aspects of the business, a business philosophy that has not only garnered a cadre of clients, but also the respect of those who work with the company.

Stage Directions Inc. is the preferred vendor for Bayou City Event Center, the Deborah Colton Art Gallery, River Oaks Country Club, and multiple other locales. The Methodist Hospital, Texas Instruments, Lakewood Church, BMC Software, and the Houston Rockets are among the heavy hitters on their client list.

“The scope is pretty big and we believe we haven’t really scratched the surface here in Houston,” Blake said. He stressed that the company does not compromise its standard of excellence, and whether planning for a corporate event or a wedding, Blake encourages clients of all sizes to leave what’s been before at the door and get ready to explore.

“Let’s dream it together and take it to the next level,” Blake said.

Houston Astros celebrate 5-year anniversary of first-ever World Series win

George Springer raises the 2017 World Series trophy.

The Houston Astros are spending the fifth anniversary of their first World Series championship doing what else than to win another one.

With Game 3 looking like a certainty to be played on Tuesday, November 1 after a Monday night rainout, the four-time American League pennant winners gave their fans, detractors, and basically any unbiased baseball observer a reminder of the championship moment.

The ball club posted a 13-second video of former Astros pitcher Charlie Morton inducing Los Angeles Dodgers batter Corey Seager into a groundout to José Altuve, representing the final out of Game 7 in LA.

Of course, as MLB revealed almost three years later, the championship capped off a year that wasn't entirely played fairly, which is something fans in ballparks that aren't Minute Maid Park have never let the Astros live down to this day.

But, for just that one night on November 1, 2017, the Astros' victory allowed a city that was two months removed from Hurricane Harvey to celebrate that franchise's first championship since entering the majors in 1962.

Bustling Lower Heights mixed-use development adds breakfast, healthy fare, spas, and more

Familiar names are coming to the development.

A Heights-area mixed-use development is expanding with new restaurant and retail tenants. Gulf Coast Commercial Group has signed the new arrivals to the Lower Heights District, the 24-acre, Kroger and Home Depot-anchored development that's located just south of the Heights near the intersection of Studemont and I-10 .

Leading the list is Flat Top Grill, which is scheduled to open in December. Part of the Dallas-based Mongolian Concepts Restaurant Group (Genghis Grill), the restaurant provides diners with the ability to build-their-own meals from more than 80 ingredients, including vegetables, scratch-made sauces, proteins, and spices. The flexible menu caters to those seeking keto, low carb, gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian options. Diners can pair their creations with cocktails, beer, or wine.

The development recently welcome the ninth Houston-area location of brunch concept First Watch. Known for signature items like lemon-ricotta pancakes, superfood kale salad, and million dollar bacon, the restaurant serves breakfast, brunch, and lunch daily. An extensive beverage program includes juices, coffee, and cocktails.

Also new to the development is Houston’s first Scissors & Scotch. The men’s grooming concept pairs haircuts and beard trims with a cocktail lounge. Regulars sign up for memberships that bring discounts on services and other perks.

Finally, local favorites Thrive Drip Spa and Salon Lofts will also open new locations at the development. Slated to open in early 2023, Thrive, which offers IV vitamin infusion therapy, will occupy a 2,000-square-foot space. Salon Lofts will occupy more than 5,100-square-feet when it opens in February or March 2023.

“We’re excited to continue expanding the mix of premium dining, retail and service offerings at Lower Heights District, which is ideally positioned to serve businesses and residents in and along the adjacent First Ward Arts District, Washington Corridor and The Heights, which is linked to the project via a hike and bike trail extension,” Gulf Coast vice president of leasing Danny Miller said in a statement.

A cult favorite, Ganni, just dropped their newest collaboration with Submission Beauty. Currently, they are only available for purchase through Hotel Lulu – call 979-249-5174 or email ciao@hotellulutx.com.

JJ Olivier

The Lily Rose Gown is LOOK Lifestyle's newest addition to their sleepwear collection – it is feminine, comfortable and machine washable. Perfect for when the temperature drops, the Dottie Duvet is 100-percent cotton and handwoven by Italian artisans.

Nutcracker Market

The Nutcracker Market returns to NRG Stadium for the 42nd annual event from November 10-13. The highly anticipated event will host over 270 merchants from across the country, including 50 new merchants showcasing a curated collection of holiday items, gourmet food, apparel, jewelry, accessories, home decor, gifts, toys and more. Proceeds from admission tickets plus 11 percent of merchandise sales support the Houston Ballet Foundation, its Academy and scholarship programs.

Nordstromand Nordstrom Rack

This year, Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack are making holiday shopping even more fun and convenient. Beginning November 4, Nordstrom will unveil In-Store Gifting Stations where shoppers can discover grab-and-go gifts at self-service stations that will feature an edit of merchandise across several categories. Nordstrom Rack will get in on the action by offering a new and expanded assortment of easy grab-and-go boxed gifts in-store and online. Customers can conveniently shop top brands like Adidas, Kate Spade New York, Madewell, Marc Jacobs, Mattel, UGG, and many more.
