Campaign not aware of casting call
Katrina evacuee look-alikes wanted for Bill White ad
Can you look down and out? Have a handy wardrobe of drab, tattered clothing and maybe a ragged backpack, knapsack, suitcase or two? Then show up in Austin this Sunday to be in an ad promoting Bill White for Texas governor.
The Austin Film Festival posted a casting call in its newsletter for extras needed to portray Hurricane Katrina evacuees in a short scene in a “Democratic Ad shooting in support of Bill White.” Hopefully, Democrats will not be shot on sight, but rather in a video to be “featured on campaign websites” and that will “screen across the state at fundraising events and screenings.”
There is no pay (ah, such is often the plight of the Texas extra) but if White’s your guy you can travel to the Capitol City and join his cause. Just show up at Austin Studios (the former Mueller airport facility), 1901 E. 51st Street, at 4 p.m. Sunday and head for Stage 3. The shoot will take approximately two hours and please, “no brand new or colorful items.” Don’t wear or bring anything that could be construed as looking cheerful or happy.
White’s campaign spokesperson Katy Bacon knew nothing of the casting call but figured it must be part of a filmmakers’ initiative to support the campaign. Last month the Associated Press reported that film producer Duncan Montgomery is organizing independent filmmakers to make short movies in support of White's campaign. The films will be shown on the Internet and premiere at a future White campaign event in Austin.
"The goal of the initiative is to get some interesting projects that highlight the issues important in the campaign and highlight the contrast between the two candidates, and show that to the Texas public," Montgomery said.
Representatives at Austin Studios declined numerous requests to reveal the name of the organizer of Sunday's shoot or pass on a message to him or her. Representatives for the Austin Film Festival did not return phone calls.
