Who's HOU at SXSW: New website spotlights Houston talent
For years, Houstonians have been attending the annual South by Southwest conference in Austin, bringing attention to the wealth of savvy developers, filmmakers and musicians harbored in our own city.
Now, with the launch of a new website on March 1, the worldwide creative community can have access to and knowledge of the resources that Houston offers, outside of the annual event.
"Houston's mentality is very different. We're not a Kardashian town, if you catch my drift," says Scott Szabo, sound guy extraordinaire and owner of Szabo Sound & Music.
The site, Who's HOU, is the brainchild of filmmaker Karen Aptekar — though she claims that the idea for a web-based bank of Houston creatives has long been in the works.
"Who's HOU is a collaboration of people who work in different industries, with different skills, working together on a project without money," Aptekar tells CultureMap.
It's also a point of interaction for interdisciplinary community members, and an opportunity for wizened, established media industry players to exchange ideas with the "rising stars" of the new generation.
But the real reason for Who's HOU is a spotlight of Houston's talents: With the support of Mayor Annise Parker, the website will market our city as a creative resource and tourist destination.
"Houston's mentality is very different. We're not a Kardashian town, if you catch my drift," says Scott Szabo, sound guy extraordinaire and owner of Szabo Sound & Music. He got involved with the project early on, in hopes of proving to the world what Houston can do. "It's great that we aren't known as smoke blowers, but that's sometimes to the detriment of Houston creatives."
"This is the most amazing city," said Aptekar, who has consulted with lawyers, businessmen, designers, media socialites and filmmakers who are eager to collaborate, sharing time and expending energy to get the site and the organization off of the ground in time for the festival in mid-March.
Sponsors — including Schipul, TEXCAM, Copy.com, the Caroline Sessions, Art Car: The Movie, SugarHill Recording Studios and Non-Practicing Productions — have worked with the organization's non-profit partners (KTRU, the Houston Technology Center, the Houston Film Commission, Texas Accountants and Lawyers for the Arts) and almost 60 Houston-based participants ranging in experience from undergraduate students to media veterans with impressive pedigree.
Interns work alongside professionals, each member of the group volunteering in some capacity: Designing web elements, shooting spots, creating original content for the site or working at the Who's HOU tradeshow booth at the Austin festival, which runs March 8 through 18.
Once the festival begins, sponsor Mi Casa Entertainment will be following Who's HOU around the festival, shooting footage to be aired on the site. The organization, in turn, will focus on promotion and outreach, churning out videos and blog posts by and about Houston-based panelists, speakers and participants.
