    Super Bowl Party Planner

The true secret to a great Super Bowl party: Top Houston restaurants that will do all your cooking

    Eric Sandler
    Jan 31, 2014 | 10:02 am

Super Bowl Sunday is almost here and, while a contest between the Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks might be pretty meaningless for some Houston Texans fans, the big game still provides a great excuse to gather together and watch the game.

Many people will cook or hold potlucks. Many more will order pizza. Both of those are fine, of course, but Houston’s restaurants have their own suggestions for what to eat during the game, the commercials and halftime. Just remember, no talking during the commercials. They’re the most important part!

    Pizzitola’s BBQ

This barbecue institution is usually closed on Sundays, but they’ll be open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for pick up orders. Racks of their signature ribs are only $19.95 if ordered by Saturday or $24.95 if bought day of. Call 713-227-2283 to reserve.

    Feges BBQ

Underbelly line cook Patrick Feges is firing up his smoker to prepare some bulk orders for Super Sunday. Whole briskets are $70, five pounds of pulled pork is $60, five pounds of chopped beef runs $50 and racks of ribs are $30. Email patrick8403@gmail.com to place orders.

    Underbelly/Hay Merchant

The related restaurants will be offering their usual to-go catering options for the game like a 35 pack of mini-corn dogs or enough Korean braised goat to feed 25 if ordered 48 hours in advance. Want to party with chef/owner Chris Shepherd?

He'll be at Hay Merchant with a special menu that blends Chinese New Year and Super Bowl classics. While Shepherd has been known to throw everything from beef kidneys to sweetbreads in General Tso's sauce, on Sunday he'll actually serve General Tso's chicken for the first time ever.

    Goro & Gun

Take the restaurant's signature dead rapper wings home. Flavors include Easy-E (Korean red pepper paste, sesame seeds), Ol' Dirty Bastard (sambal, honey, cilantro), coconut curry and classic Buffalo. Prices are $25 for 25, $45 for 50, $75 for 70 and $100 for 90. Order at least a day in advance and pick up until half time on game day. 832-708-6195.

    Three Brothers Bakery

The Houston bakery institution has a variety of options for Super Bowl revelry. Order a pastry tray with football themed white chocolate dipped and decorated gingerbread cookies or custom cake balls. Grilling? Consider some hamburger or hot dogs buns.

    RDG + Bar Annie

Load up on Southwest-inspired cuisine from this Houston classic. Choices include slabs of baby back ribs ($24), rolled fried chicken tacos ($24 for two dozen), whole beef tenderloin ($225) and a variety of dip and salsas. Want dessert? Consider macaroons or brownies ($24 for 12). Call 713-840-1111 to order.

    D’Amico’s Italian Market Cafe

This Rice Village favorite was good enough for Vice President Joe Biden, so surely it's perfect for Super Bowl snacking. Start with a Nash pizza topped with pesto, marinara, cheese, artichoke hearts, grilled chicken and a squeeze of lemon. Add in meatballs ($24 for 12) and giant sandwich packs ($40 or $80). Orders require 24 hour advance notice. Call 713-526-3400.

    Arcodoro

Houston's Sardinian restaurant is offering panini trays by the dozen ($33 for turkey, $39 for roast beef) and antipasti trays to serve 8-12 or 12-16 ($75, $140). Call 713-621-6858 or email lori@gourmetsardinia.com. Orders are due by 3 p.m. on Friday.

    Sylvia’s Enchilada Kitchen

Nothing says a party like Tex-Mex. Start with an appetizer sampler ($12 per person) that includes quesadilla, queso, guacamole and more. For an entree, there's a fajitas party for four that includes all the fixes ($59.95) or an enchilada party pack for four that includes two per person with a choice from Sylvia's 18 varieties ($45, includes rice and beans). Call Woodway location at 713-334-7295, or the Westheimer one at 281-679-8300 for more information.

    Kenny & Ziggy's

This Galleria deli is already known for huge sandwiches, but the restaurant ups the ante on Super Sunday with a three-six foot long Football Hero selling for $38 per foot (each foot feeds three to four people) that comes with sides and a choice of two dozen mini potato knishes, mini kasha knishes, mini spinach knishes or franks in a blanket. All orders must be place before noon Saturday. Call 713-871-8883.

    Liberty Kitchen/BRC

The Heights location of Liberty Kitchen is selling both cheeseburger sliders by the dozen ($18) and Frito pie for 10 ($18). For a lighter option, order one pound of smoked salmon with smoked salt butter and sliced baguettes ($28).

BRC Gastropub is offering a dozen grilled and roasted chicken legs with hot sauce syrup ($24) and a dozen pigs in blankets made with Wimmer's hot dogs and wrapped in the restaurant's signature cheddar biscuits ($27).

A Galleria-area Irish pub has claimed a prime Montrose space for its second location. Ducky’s Pizza and Tavern is now operating in a quiet, soft opening phase in the former Riel space at 1927 Fairview Street.

It’s the latest project from veteran Houston restaurateur Michael Collins, who owns the original Ducky McSweeney’s Irish Pub near the Galleria, as well as Sushi on Post Oak and Midtown sushi staple The Fish.

“We’ve been after that building for a couple of years and knew Ducky’s would be a good fit for the neighborhood,” Collins tells CultureMap.

From his perspective, Ducky’s blend of a casual, sports bar atmosphere with well made pizza should appeal to area residents looking for a place to gather to watch a game or blow off some steam after work. By serving food until 1:30 am, he also hopes to draw in workers from Montrose’s numerous restaurants and bars.

“Those guys at Riel did a great job. They had a fantastic run,” Collins says. “It was time for a change in the neighborhood. I think all of Houston is just looking for somewhere casual to hang out.”

Completing their work in just 35 days after Riel’s closure in August, Collins and his team have made the space their own with some simple cosmetic changes, starting with new exterior signage. Inside, patrons will notice the new TVs on the walls to follow all of the night’s games. One of the other additions is Ducky’s use of classic Houston blue-and-white subway tiles that spell out “I (heart symbol) Montrose.” At the far end of the restaurant, diners will find a couple of dart boards for a little friendly competition. Collins also added some additional air conditioning units to help keep the interior temps down.

Ducky's Pizza Tavern is now open in Montrose.

At the heart of the menu are Ducky’s New York-style pizzas, which are baked in a deck-style pizza oven that’s been installed at the bar. Customers have a range of options, starting with traditional pies like pepperoni, the Montrose (prosciutto and arugula with a balsamic glaze), meat lovers, a simple vodka sauce with basil, and a classic Hawaiian. On the more adventurous side, consider the H-Town, made with brisket, blackened shrimp, jalapenos, and Alfredo sauce, or the Al Pastor, topped with pork, pineapple, onion, cilantro, and salsa verde ranch. All of Ducky’s pizzas are available in a shareable, 14-inch size or a personal nano. Gluten free dough is also available.

Patrons may supplement their pizzas with shareable bites such as meatballs, chicken wings, crab rangoon cheesy toast, spinach bacon dip, or nachos. Sandwiches, including a cheeseburger, salads, and house made carrot cake round out the menu.

On the cocktail side, look for riffs on classics such as the apple-flavored Ciderita or the Basic Witch, an espresso martini topped with egg white foam. Collins says he’s stocking a more premium selection of wine and liquor than the original location near the Galleria, since that what Montrose residents expect from their bars.

“It’s an affluent neighborhood,” he says. “We want to give people what they expect.”
