Railyard strip center looks to pull off a sleek makeover, sexy adults-only Tex-Mex included

Have you noticed that Melcher Crossing, the strip center located on San Felipe by the railroad tracks, is looking a little sleeker lately?

The building has seen a number of changes since its initial construction in 1956, as an anchor to a UtoteM store owned by LeRoy Melcher. Ground-up renovations began in late 2009 under the direction of LeRoy's grandson, Trey Melcher, now the president of Melcher Investments.

Inspired by a photograph of an old UtoteM store, the art deco-inspired design has a white facade, pillars covered by shiny black tiles and simple signs on the aluminum-rimmed overhang.

This redesign perfectly suits two relatively new additions to the space: The Railyard Neighborhood Bara finalist for the 2012 Nighclub & Bar Awards, and Vida's sexy adults-only Tex-Mex, which opened in late 2011. Both are owned by Melcher Investments.

Christy's Liquor, which has been a tenant since 1976, will remain at the center, as will the Postal Station, which has been renting space there since 1977. The owners of the Postal Station believe that the renovation will help in attracting customers.

Harry's Shoes & Boots will move a few doors down to a new space in recognition of the company's 50 years in business, and Real Thai Massage will lease a wellness studio, slated to open in March.
