Unwind from the daily grind with the gift of half-price wine. Here are eight eateries/watering holes for your drinking pleasure, spanning every day of the week.
The Corkscrew — Mondays can be tough, but this Heights neighborhood joint offers a light at the end of the work day tunnel thanks to an apres-work special (Mondays, 4-10 pm) featuring half-price bottles of wine and a discount on the kitchen's signature thin-crust pizzas ($10). The laid-back spot also boasts a piano player tickling the ivories starting at 6 pm.
The Tasting Room — Making wine enthusiasts’ dreams come true, the popular bar with three locales serves up a super-long happy hour deal (weekdays, 11 am-6 pm) with 50 percent off a dozen wines by the glass, plus several more vintages priced at just $5 per glass, bringing vino bliss to your day.
MKT Bar — Put down your briefcase and pick up a wine glass at the bar inside downtown’s Phoenicia Specialty Foods. The hump day special (Wednesdays, 2-10 pm) presents half-priced bottles of wine, a price break on charcuterie and cheese plates ($8) and tunes from a rotating lineup of Houston notables as they churn behind the DJ booth to spin their vinyl favorites (7-10 pm).
Down House — Hit up the Heights area all-in-one coffee house, café and bar during happy hour (daily, 3-5 pm) and enjoy quarter litres of wine for 50 percent less. With the money you save, spring for the colossal Lone Star Burger (with Cabot cheddar, heirloom tomatoes, lettuce, housemade mustard and aïoli on a Slow Dough challah bun) also on special ($15).
Anejo — The upscale hotspot at Uptown Park takes Tex-Mex to a new level with elevated spins on Tex-Mex favorites and items prepared tableside like deluxe parrillada platters. Dig in while you imbibe select wines by the glass, half-off from morning until early evening on the happy hour menu (daily, 11 am. - 6 p.m.).
Underbelly — It's no secret that pretty much everything at the acclaimed Montrose restaurant is standout from the food to the wine list. Drink up at the bar where all wines by the glass can be yours for half-price (Monday-Saturday, 3-6:30 pm and again from 10 pm to midnight).
This isn't your ordinary list of vinos. With one of the coolest wine menus in town, the restaurant’s owner, chef Chris Shepherd, collaborated with Houston rapper Bun B on notes for the by-the-glass section, plus local artist Matt Tabor.
North Italia —Sundays should be easy, preferably with a nice glass of wine on the cheap. Italian eatery North Italia inside BLVD Place makes it happen. Select bottles on the menu are half-off all day long from 10 am to 10 pm.
13 celsius — Score big at the chic Midtown wine bar where you’ll find by-the-bottle selections — either the last bottle of a special wine or a limited-edition wine — at half price from 4 pm to close.
