Houston community activist Quanell X helped bring a day-long manhunt to an end, escorting a 35-year-old suspect to authorities following a violent triple murder at a high-end Stafford car wash.

Investigators say that La-Melvin Johnson arrived at  Royal Mobile Detailing & Car Wash for a special car-detailing event Sunday morning. Due to rainy conditions, car wash owner Harvey Simmons, 34, canceled the session and offered the workers a small amount of compensation for their time.

Unhappy with the situation, Johnson allegedly retrieved a gun from his vehicle and proceeded to shoot Simmons along with another employee and a teenager who was interviewing for a job.

"This is so unreal," Simmons’ wife told KHOU after the shooting. "It’s like I don’t even know how to feel right now. I lost a husband. The children, they lost a father."

She said her husband enjoyed the opportunity to help those down on their luck and knew that Johnson —who court records show has faced several assault charges in the past — had become a problem at the business.

Sitting in a car with Quanell X on Monday, Johnson told KHOU Ch. 11 reporter Rucks Russell that he was defending himself.

"The truth will come out," he said. "It was self-defense — just bottom line."
