The Lowdown

Avalon Diner has dished up comfort food as addictive as crack cocaine in the heart of fancy-pants River Oaks since 1938. Whether it’s for one of the diner’s old fashioned drugstore hamburgers with a soda fountain beverage (like an ice cream float or milkshake) or a hearty breakfast of fresh country eggs, biscuits, ham and spunky hash browns laced with onion, bell pepper, paprika and a shot of Tabasco, the rich and powerful of Houston have been making regular pilgrimages here for decades to get their fix of a Mayberry atmosphere and down-home cooking.

Insider Information

The milkshakes are made with Blue Bell ice cream, and the lemonade and limeade is served fresh.
