El Tiempo Cantina-Montrose
While most Tex-Mex eateries have plenty of mundane dishes, like non-threatening nachos and quesadillas made with bland cheese, the menu at El Tiempo is dominated by adventurous entrees. This restaurant is bursting with complex flavors such as quail rubbed with spices, robust jalapeño sausage, red-hot chile rellenos . . . and then there are those sexy shrimp-and-cheese-stuffed fried avocados. The atmosphere is casual and the flower-decked patio is a great place to sip one of the fresh fruit margaritas, which are masterfully concocted with fresh guava, mango, coconut, raspberry and melon. El Tiempo is a place where patrons love to linger, especially over its wildly popular Sunday brunch—another reason not to bring the kids.
El Tiempo is owned by the Laurenzo family, whose matriarch Mama Ninfa popularized tacos al carbon in Houston.
