A kid's dream
What drought? The world's largest sprinkler sprays Discovery Green
Brace yourself, Houstonians. Something big is about to happen.
Don your cutest swimwear and get ready to run around like the 5-year-old that you truly are on the inside, because the World's Largest Sprinkler is headed to Discovery Green.
From Friday through Sunday, the mammoth sprinkler, sponsored by Target, will be showering the park in an effort to "Make Summer Funner."
Target's Kristy Welker gave CultureMap the inside scoop on just how big visitors can expect the sprinkler to be: She promises a 20-foot-long contraption that weighs 1,000 pounds and sits on an Astroturf base 40 feet in diameter.
And never fear, environmentally conscious ones (or drought wonderers), the sprinkler's base collects the water it sprays and filters it to be re-sprayed. Susanne Theis, Discovery Green's programming director, says that the leftover water will not go to waste.
She promises a 20-foot-long contraption that weighs 1,000 pounds and sits on an Astroturf base 40 feet in diameter.
"It is being captured in a basin, filtered and recycled, like the water in our Gateway Fountain and Mist Tree," she explains, "At the end of the three days, it will be used to water Discovery Green’s thirsty lawns and to help fill Kinder Lake, which is lower than usual due to the drought."
Discovery Green isn't just a sprinkler showcase this weekend. There will be outdoor activities and games as well as summer essentials such as flip flops, sunscreen, towels, and ponchos available for parents to use while their kids have fun in the sun.
Sadly, Welker also admits that the sprinkler will not be certified by or listed in the next installment of the Guinness Book of World Records. Still, she insists that her research indicates that the sprinkler is the largest of its kind in the world (there isn't a Guinness listing for largest sprinkler).
