    The Sweetest Santa

Sugar rush: Massive chocolate holiday scene weighs in at 1.5 tons of sweetness

    Elizabeth Rhodes
    Dec 19, 2015 | 2:00 pm

Santa Claus has landed in Houston and he's sweeter than you can possibly imagine.

To celebrate the holiday season, the Hilton Americas-Houston and its award-winning pastry chef Mahesh Weerasinghe created a massive chocolate display featuring Santa and his elves, skillfully crafted from more than 1.5 tons of chocolate.

Located in the lobby of the hotel, the sweet holiday scene is even more spectacular than ever this year with all of the chocolate figures painted in full color for the first time.

Hand-sculpted from over 2,500 pounds of chocolate and chocolate dough — equivalent to 2,160,000 chocolate chips and more than 6 million calories — the larger-than-life chocolate Santa sits in his chair, accompanied by his sleigh, elves, reindeer, a pack of gifts and wagon full of toys. New additions to the sweet scene this year include holiday characters such as the Grinch and Olaf from the Disney film Frozen, as well as a 10-building gingerbread village.

Using his training from award-winning chocolatier Rudy Wieder, combined with his own artistic talent, Weerasinghe crafted the tasty one-of-a-kind creation by sculpting the chocolate just as an artist sculpts clay. It took approximately 1,000 man-hours and four months of creative work and construction to go from the initial conception to the completion of the chocolate scene.

A poured milk chocolate floor sculpted to replicate weathered boards adds to the sugary scene, adding another 1,094,000 calories. Also new this year, a gingerbread village adds 120 pounds and 219,000 calories to the display. An additional 75 pounds and 133,000 calories of sparkling sugar paste pastillage ornaments decorating the Christmas tree finish off the sweetness for a total of almost 3,300 pounds of chocolate and confections — totaling more than 7,636,000 calories.

The holiday display will be on view at the Hilton Americas-Houston through December 29.

    ON THE MOVE

Houston ranks No. 1 on new list of America's top moving destinations

Houston remains the nation's top moving destination.

Drawn by its vibrant culture and growing job market, nationwide movers have increasingly chosen Houston as their new home. Based on national relocation trends, a new study by leasing company Penske Truck Rental ranks the Bayou City No. 1 among the top 10 moving destinations in the United States for 2024.

Four Texas cities ranked among the top 10 moving destinations. Following Houston, San Antonio ranks No. 3 with Dallas at No. 4. and Austin at No. 9.

According to the study, the primary reasons for relocation in 2024 include better job opportunities and a lower cost of living. Movers were also driven by more personal reasons for relocation, such as enjoying a closer proximity to loved ones and more space.

With thriving job opportunities, no state income tax, and a lower cost of living, Houston offers appealing advantages for relocation, giving residents plenty of reason to take pride in calling the city home. Unsurprisingly, two Florida cities also made the top 10, as the state shares the same tax benefit.

Recently, Houston was left off British gambling platform Betway.com's list of the 15 coolest cities in America — a ranking based on the number of tattoo shops, record stores, and vegan restaurants. While those factors may contribute to the quality of living, Penske's data suggests economic considerations hold far more sway than kale smoothies.

Penske compiled the data by analyzing one-way truck rental reservations made through the company website, following up with a customer survey. The report said 69 percent of its customers preferred renting and driving their own vehicle, but didn't state whether that decision was motivated by cost.

Houston has remained at the top of the list for four consecutive years. The rest of the top destination places were spread throughout the country. This is the complete list:

    • No. 1 — Houston, Texas
    • No. 2 — Atlanta, Georgia
    • No. 3 — San Antonio, Texas
    • No. 4 — Dallas, Texas
    • No. 5 — Orlando, Florida
    • No. 6 — Charlotte, North Carolina
    • No. 7 — Las Vegas, Nevada
    • No. 8 — Chicago, Illinois
    • No. 9 — Austin, Texas
    • No. 10 — Tampa, Florida
