Glassell School art party blasts from the past and looks to the future

A hip and happening crowd of artists, art-aficionados, and pretty party people filled the Museum of Fine Arts Cullinan Hall for the Glassell School of Art’s Benefit and Silent Auction. This year’s theme, Back to the Future, was chosen as a tribute to past students with a nod to the Glassell’s future home, an 80,000-square-foot building designed by Steven Holl Architects slated for completion in early 2018.

A sleek stainless steel DeLorean sports car with its gull-wing doors flung wide open was parked at the museum’s historic Main Street entrance, providing a fitting photo-op for arriving guests. The 1980s-era auto was featured in the film Back to the Future as a tricked-out time machine.

Inside the soaring gallery space more than 240 partygoers chatted, nibbled on tasty tidbits, and perused an impressive art collection submitted for the silent auction by local and national artists. An abundance of iPads stationed strategically throughout the building made bidding a breeze while the party band The Swatchmen delivered an ‘80s-inspired beat amid the buzz of lively cocktail conversation.

During the buffet dinner, catered by City Kitchen, Glassell director Joe Havel expressed excitement about hosting next year’s fundraiser in the new building. Whimsical party favors, including fuzzy snap bracelets, mini Rubik’s cubes, and neon sunglasses, were passed around on clear lucite trays as the band picked up the pace and the dance floor swelled with partygoers.

On the scene were Claire and Doug Ankenman, Karen Bradshaw, Leslie and Brad Bucher, Bettie Cartwright, Johanna Donson, Alfred C. Glassell, III, Sam Gorman, Gwen and John McCauley, Nancy Powell Moore, Judy and Scott Nyquist, Kathy and John Orton, Chris Goins and Josh Pazda, and Maria Inez Sicardi.

Memorial Park's Eastern Glades makes for a fun trip.

For Texans, winter in the Lone Star State brings a long-awaited respite from six months of unbearable heat. We're pretty content to finally leave the house without a double (or triple) layer of SPF. But for tourists, winter in Texas brings respite from the opposite problem: colder climates where locals actually experience things like rain and snow. A recent WalletHub study shows Texas taking three of the top 10 "best winter vacation destinations for warm-weather lovers," with Houston landing at No. 7.

Specifically, Houston scores top marks for lowest travel costs (No. 1) and most attractions (No. 9).

Comparing around 70 of the largest U.S. metro areas, the study groups cities by warm and cold weather. Rather than a subjective survey of each locale's scenic beauty (in which Texas cities would also sweep the top 10, of course), WalletHub focused on the cost and convenience of traveling to each city, as well as the number of attractions and variety of activities in each destination.

As a result, the two lists rank "the cheapest U.S. destinations that are also the easiest to reach," according to the study's landing page. To compile the data, WalletHub measured 37 key metrics, including two weeks of flight data, safety indicators, and weather predictions.

In the warm weather category, Nevada's Las Vegas-Henderson-Paradise metro area nabbed the No. 1 spot with an overall score of 67.18 and high marks in the number-of-attractions category (No. 2) and number of warm-weather activities (No. 1).

In total, Texas took nine of the 37 spots in the warm weather category, with three cities in the top 5. Here's how other Texas metros fared on the list:

  • Austin — No. 2. Top marks for lowest travel costs (No. 2) and best weather (No. 6).
  • Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington —No. 4. Top marks for lowest travel costs (No. 3) and best weather (No. 2).
  • San Antonio-New Braunfels — No. 5. Top marks for lowest travel costs (No. 6) and lowest local costs (No. 3).
  • Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land — No. 7. Top marks for lowest travel costs (No. 1) and number of attractions (No. 9).
  • Killeen-Temple — No. 21. Top marks for lowest travel costs (No. 6).
  • McAllen-Edinburg-Mission— No. 27. Top marks for lowest travel costs (No. 1).
  • Corpus Christi— No. 32. Top marks for lowest travel costs (No. 7).
  • Brownsville-Harlingen — No. 33.
  • Beaumont-Port Arthur— No. 35.

Irish misery makes for grand entertainment in The Banshees of Inisherin

The influence of Ireland on the modern movie landscape is undeniable, whether it’s actors like Colin Farrell, Liam Neeson, Saoirse Ronan, Brendan Gleeson, and Cillian Murphy, or directors like Jim Sheridan, Martin McDonagh, and Neil Jordan. But movies made about Ireland are in relatively short supply, and even when they do pop up, they tend to be heavy dramas.

McDonagh, who has hopped back and forth across the Atlantic in his career, returns to his ancestral home with The Banshees of Inisherin, which reunites McDonagh with his In Bruges stars. Pádraic (Farrell) and Colm (Gleeson) live on the fictional Irish island of Inisherin in 1923, with little to do except tend to the land and drink at the local pub. Pádraic and Colm are friends, until – for seemingly no reason whatsoever – Colm decides to end their friendship.

Pádraic is unable to accept this turn of events, especially as he sees Colm continue to enjoy himself with other people. And so he keeps on hounding Colm for the reason behind his out-of-nowhere decision, a pursuit that gains him few answers and only serves to escalate the feud in unexpected ways.

Written and directed by McDonagh, the film is at once one of the funniest movies of the year and one of the saddest. Colm rebuffing Pádraic’s repeated pleas for any kind of explanation is often played for laughs and never fails to entertain, often due to the reactions of those around them. In fact, the side characters – like Pádraic’s sister Siobhan (Kerry Condon), bartender Jonjo (Pat Shortt), and local idiot Dominic (Barry Keoghan) – are the secret sauce that keep the film as enjoyable as it is.

The premise is simple, but how McDonagh manages to mine that basic idea is something to behold. Little details, like the local busybody, Mrs. McCormick (Sheila Flitton), or the animals Pádraic and Colm own, add color to an already colorful film. And references to the ongoing Irish Civil War on the mainland underscores the pettiness of the beef between the two men without bogging the story down with unnecessary details.

For anyone who’s never been to Ireland, it can be difficult to explain the bleak beauty the country holds, but this film comes as close as anything to showing it. The rural area in which it takes place is filled with a seemingly endless array of black stone walls and the occasional building, a visual that serves to be pleasing to the eyes and important for character development.

McDonagh’s story succeeds even though – or, perhaps, because – the characters seem to have nothing else going on in their lives. Save for the bartender, the local priest, and a police officer, no one seems to be employed in any way in the town. That leaves everyone with plenty of time to gawk at Pádraic and Colm’s ongoing argument and other small matters.

Farrell and Gleeson have a chemistry together that makes each of their scenes together a supreme pleasure to watch. The way Farrell transforms himself into a needy sad-sack is fantastic, and Gleeson’s stone-faced reactions are the perfect complement. The supporting actors are just as good in smaller doses, especially Condon and Shortt.

The central disagreement in The Banshees of Inisherin may be inexplicable, but the film itself is fun to watch from beginning to end, even when it gets depressing. Ireland and the Irish film community have rarely been as well represented as they are here.

Houston’s newest Korean steakhouse has opened in the Heights. Karne began its soft opening this week ahead of its grand opening November 11.

Located in a recently constructed building at 2805 White Oak Dr., Karne is the latest project from Houston restaurateur Jason Cho. Known for his Korean fried chicken restaurant Dak & Bop and as the franchisee for the Galleria-area location of Korean coffee shop Tom N Toms, Cho partnered with chef Yurum “KP” Nam to open Karne. Nam brings extensive experience to his role, including acclaimed restaurants The Modern and Gramercy Tavern, as well as Zusik, a Korean restaurant he owned in the West Village.

“My culinary training has prepared me with French, Italian, American techniques,” Nam said in a statement. “I use that to create very simple, straightforward Korean food.”

At Karne, that "straightforward Korean food" centers around beef. Fittingly for a steakhouse, Karne serves several different cuts and grades of meat, ranging from traditional Korean marinated meats to Prime beef, dry-aged, American wagyu, and Japanese wagyu. They’re grilled tableside by the restaurant’s staff.

Diners may order a la carte — by selecting options such as marinated short rib, dry-aged ribeye, or American wagyu flat iron — or opt for the “Karnivore Platter” that comes with five different cuts, kimchi, soup, dipping sauces, and more. Eventually, the restaurant will offer a more premium chef’s tasting menu that will be served in one of the restaurant’s private dining rooms. Beyond beef, the restaurant puts a Korean spin on steakhouse classics with dishes such as hot and cold seafood towers, beef carpaccio, and tuna tartare. Classic Korean dishes such as Korean fried chicken, kimchi fried rice, and hot stone bibimbap are also available.

Pairing options include a range of craft cocktails and a list of 173 wines.

Well-traveled customers may recognize that the menu’s style and presentation bears a certain resemblance to Cote, the upscale Korean steakhouse that has earned one Michelin star in both New York and Miami. For example, Karne serves a dish called Land & Sea, a combination of beef tartare, caviar, and quail egg, that’s similar to Cote’s “Steak & Eggs.” The “Karnivore Platter” is similar in its offerings to Cote’s “Butcher’s Feast.”

A representative acknowledges that Cho and Nam aspire to achieve Cote’s level of success, but states plainly that its menu is “influenced by tastes from Korea, Texas and New York.”

“Our dishes are unique because chef KP is pouring in all of his knowledge and culinary skills into creating a curated menu for fine Korean cuisine,” Cho said in a statement. “The taste, flavor, and presentation of the dishes bring an elevated experience.”

Karne will also get a boost via its partnership with Youtube star Mike Chen. The content creator has more than 4 million subscribers to his Strictly Dumpling channel and more than 1.5 million subscribes to his Mike Chen channel. Viewers got a sneak peak at Karne’s interior in a clip Chen posted last year that’s garnered 1 million views. Although Chen is currently living in Singapore, Cho acknowledges that he’ll be filming videos from the restaurant in the months to come.
