Love was certainly in the air when Alex Martinez celebrated his 50th birthday amid a sea of political activists, professional fundraisers and friends at the Hilton Americas-Houston Skyline Room. Not only did his partner David Arpin, Houston First board member and one-time treasurer for Mayor Annise Parker's campaign, share memories of the gents' 17 years together but he also announced their engagement.
The duo are planning a September merger in Seattle.
Headliners at the dual celebration were Mayor Parker and Kathy Hubbard and Metro chairman Gilbert Garcia as well as friends from across the country.
The festivities included entertainment by Jerry Atwood and Sharon Montgomery, a slide show of photos from Alex's first half-century and a feast that included a whole roasted pig with all the trimmings and a fancy birthday cake from Three Brothers Bakery.
The party crowd included DeeDee Garcia, Michael Pearce and Matt Burrus-Pearce, Cindi and Dr. Franklin Rose, Kim Padgett, Melissa Edwards, Bruce Padilla and Shelby Kibodeaux, Kim Padgett, Kenneth Gale and Evan Thayer, Astley and Alex Blair with their daughter Alice Phipps, Terry Zmyslo and William Dobbs.
