What's the trendy dessert of the day? It doesn't matter at Petite Sweets. The new bakery and sweet shop by the owners of BRC Gastropub and Belvedere opened Tuesday in Upper Kirby across from Bed Bath & Beyond.

The cute but spare space holds cookies, cake balls, cupcakes, macarons, whoopie pies and homemade marshmallows, all of them (except the rich, cakey whoopie pies) in adorable petite portions, plus coffee made from local Amaya Roasting Company.

On first taste, the macarons are a bit thicker than would be ideal, but the fun flavors of the cake balls (tiramisu, lemon, red velvet) and marshmallows (blueberry!) up the ante. In a world of frozen yogurt, the best surprise was a sweet-but-not-saccharine frozen custard that really wowed. (Also, why is this the first frozen custard inside the Loop? Frozen custard is delicious!)

Have you been to Petite Sweets yet? What do you think?
