The Urban Land Institute recently handed out its Development of Distinction awards, highlighting the past year's most successful planning efforts in a city, well . . . not always known for its planning efforts.

In late 2012, 10 projects were nominated for the sixth annual awards which consider design along with real estate feasibility. Nominees ranged from for-profit ventures like Sugar Land Town Square to preservation efforts like Parks Department's vintage mid-century, which earned a Heritage Award.

Click through the slideshow for a look at the winners. A detailed video is included for each.

Runners-up and honorable mentions are listed on the ULI–Houston website.
