You might have seen Cloud 10 Creamery's flavors on the dessert menus of Underbelly, Roost or the Modular, or you may have sampled the creations of creamery co-owner Chris Leung at Kata Robata, where he serves as pastry chef.
But later this year, sweet-toothed diners will be able to snag a scoop at Cloud 10's proper storefront: A 1,200-square-feet spot at Hanover Rice Village, the mixed-use development just across the street from Local Foods that will also soon be home to second locations of Coppa and Boomtown Coffee.
"We want this place to be known as a frozen dessert shop."
"Ever since we started we've wanted a brick-and-mortar," Leung tells CultureMap, revealing the goal dates to even before he and business partner Christopher Balat launched Cloud 10 as a wholesaler in the summer of 2012.
Since then, Leung's concept has included 10 original flavors — basics like Vanilla Bean and Toasted Rice, as well as unexpected combinations like Lime & Ceylon Cinnamon — with 10 limited-edition flavors introduced each season (think Malt & Tomato Ice Cream, Peach & Corn Sorbet and Black Sesame & Sesame Oil).
And just as his flavors upend expectations, Leung isn't content to adhere to the model of the typical ice cream shop. Instead, as a nod to his restaurant background, he will incorporate an open kitchen so that customers can see where their ice cream comes from.
"We want this place to be known as a frozen dessert shop," says Leung, who is playing with the novelty aspect of the treat in hopes that Cloud 10 will be as appealing to families as it is to foodies.
Beyond a rotation of 10 ice cream flavors and unusual, made-from-scratch toppings, the menu will include popsicles, ice cream sandwiches, ice cream cakes, push pops and whatever else he thinks up. But, he says, "It will begin and end with ice cream."
