Jones Hall

This architectural gem resides right in the center of the downtown theater district.  Completed in 1966, Jones Hall won the American Institute of Architecture’s most prestigious award the following year. The stunning building encompasses an entire city block, is clad in 133,000 square feet of Travertine marble from Tripoli, boasts 66-foot lobby ceilings, and swathes of red velvet upholstery.  The auditorium, a technical marvel designed by a renowned theater physicist, is composed of hundreds of movable hexagons that are shaped to best fit the acoustics of certain shows, or they can be used to shrink the space from 3,000 seats to 1,800 by dipping from the roof to eliminate the balcony.  This home of the Houston Symphony has also been the host to diverse entertainers such as David Copperfield, James Taylor, Mikhail Baryshnikov, David Sedaris, Aretha Franklin and the counterculture orchestra Pink Martini.
