Double Wedding Ring is a quilt-inspired solo exhibition by Houston artist Catherine Colangelo. The opening reception is Nov. 2 and the artist talk is on Nov. 3.
Drawn to the beautiful patterning, these new paintings are inspired by an old traditional quilt pattern known as the Double Wedding Ring. The symbol of interlocking rings can be traced all the way back to ancient Rome, and the Double Wedding Ring quilt pattern first gained popularity in the 1920s. Consisting of an overall pattern of interlocking rings, the artist was drawn to the pattern's ability to connect unrelated elements and settled on a plan to make paintings of "quilt squares" each featuring a circle. The ring pattern is superimposed once the original circle has been completed, thus connecting that quilt square to the one next to it.
