Where else but the Texas State Fair
First heart attack wins? Deep fried beer challenged by fried frozen margarita
The deep-frying competition at the Texas State Fair is fierce — they've got fried snickers, fried frito pie and even fried butter.
It was the fried butter (that didn't open up a wormhole somewhere?) that took top honors last year at the Big Tex Choice Awards, in which fried food experts compete for best taste and most creative awards. This year there are two contenders with an extra edge, or should we say an extra kick.
Mark Zable is submitting his deep-fried beer, which he says is created by a secret method (he's applied for a patent) he perfected that allows the beer's crust to cook without burning off its alcohol content. Zable takes a pretzel-like dough casing shaped roughly like a ravioli, fills it with beer and fries it for 20 seconds, leaving a fried crust filled with liquid, still-alcoholic beer.
Not to be outdone in the boozy fried goodness category, Jake Levy is submitting a deep fried frozen margarita. Yes, you read that right. Levy mixes funnel cake batter with tequila and margarita mix and serves it in a classy salt-rimmed plastic cup.
Winners will be announced on Labor Day, and their creations will be available to the public (if your waistline dares) beginning Sept. 24.
