Harry Potter's all grown up! Daniel Radcliffe chooses Houston's Hamilton Shirtsfor polished red-carpet look
Remember in 2001, when Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone featured a 12-year old boy playing the lead role? Well, in case you haven't noticed, Daniel Radcliffe is all grown up, and in addition to making millions of dollars on the Harry Potter franchise, he's been starring in Broadway hits and championing gay rights (sorry guys, he's straight).
Obviously, the 21-year-old actor spends a lot of time on the red carpet circuit — and he's one of only a handful of male celebrities who I would say is consistently well-dressed. Last year, at the premiere of the second to last installment of the Harry Potter film series, he was spotted in a slim navy suit and spread collar brown gingham shirt with a very Italian-esque wide tie knot. The GQ style blog noted: "Holy shitballs, it's a well-groomed, grown-up, dashing-as-hell Harry Potter."
One of my favorite things about Radcliffe's style is that it's simultaneously very young and very English. His well-tailored suits channel London's legendary Saville Row tailoring, and his style can be described as relatively classic. However, he wears slim ties and fitted dress shirts in bold patterns that complement his age and slender build.
In the past two weeks alone, Radcliffe has been spotted on the red carpet on three different occasions in a custom-made shirt by Houston's Hamilton Shirts. At the 29th Annual Fred & Astele Astaire Awards, he looked dashing in a solid grey pinpoint shirt and slim burgundy tie. This week, he was seen in a white and navy gingham check poplin shirt at the 2011 Drama League Awards and a white pique tuxedo front shirt at the 56th Annual Drama Desk Awards.
All three shirts were crafted right in Houston at the Hamilton Richmond Avenue factory.
The beautiful relationship came about after owners David and Kelly Hamilton and publicist Gail Rubin of Studio Communications visited members of the men's fashion press and stylists in New York. (The trio shows the latest Hamilton collection to fashion opinion makers twice a year.) Radcliffe's stylist, who also counts Gossip Girl's Ed Westwick among his clients, was impressed and later sent one of Radcliffe's shirts to Houston so the Hamiltons could make a paper pattern and keep Radcliffe's measurements on file.
They whipped up around seven shirts for Radcliffe to wear. David Hamilton told CultureMap that "Harry Potter movies are cool. And that navy gingham shirt is one of my personal favorites that I go to year round every year."
For the Drama Desk Awards, the actor, who is starring on Broadway in the revival of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, wore a Hickey Freeman & Opening Ceremony tuxedo and Hamilton tuxedo shirt. Rubin says that the stylist received the shirt but wanted a collar of a different length, so the shirt was shipped overnight to Houston where Hamilton workers whipped up another collar to specifications and overnighted it back to New York in time for Radcliffe to wear.
Rubin points out that most shirtmakers don't have such a fast turnaround time. "But because the factory is here (in Houston), it makes it easier to turn things around quickly," she says.
Wonder what Radcliffe might be wearing to the Tony awards on June 12, where he's a presenter? We'll keep you posted.
