Rest assured that, on the night of December 31, Houston will be swarming with New Year's Eve parties. Here's a rundown of festive gatherings, which include desserts, disco, drag queens, and even a sober party.

Stay safe — and feel free to party hop. The parties are listed in order of start time, so you can plan your night and your ride sharing.

Children's Museum of Houston's "Rockin' New Year's Noon"
For those who have kids who want to celebrate New Year's Eve too (but can't stay up for it), the museum will have its annual "Rockin' New Year's Noon." There will be festive hats and noisemakers, a countdown, two simultaneous ball drops and parade featuring a New Orleans-style brass band. (A pre-show kicks off at 10:45 am.) Noon.

Belly dancers and drag queens at Boheme
Start your New Year's Eve early over at this cocktail hangout. The popular bar will have an extravaganza featuring a drag show by beloved drag queens Chloe Knox, Cyn City, Angelina, and Chloe Crawford. Exotic belly dancers will perform in-between sets and around the bar. (Entertainment starts at 9 pm.) 4 pm.

"Dancing & Desserts: NYE" at Heights Theater
What's been missing at New Year's Eve parties? Desserts! Thankfully, this theater will be offering up a self-serve dessert buffet if you buy a ticket to "Dancing & Desserts: NYE," which will feature a live set from Boomtown Brass Band. There will also be a champagne toast at midnight. 7 pm-1 am.

Arnaldo Richards' Picos "Dine and Disco New Year's"
You ever wish you could've hung out with Andy, Liza, Bianca and the gang at Studio 54 back in the day? This restaurant will be fulfilling your wish with "Dine and Disco New Year's." Guests can enjoy a fabulous four-course dinner, with an open premium bar and specialty cocktails. After that, you can boogie the new year away! 8 pm.

    Conservatory's Asian-style market
Instead of throwing another NYE soiree, our favorite, underground beer and grub spot will be hosting an Asian-style night market. Among the vendors that will be ready to celebrate: Beer Garden, Noble Rot Wine Bar, aRTe Pizzeria, El Burro & the Bull Restaurant, Treacherous Leches, and others. 8 pm-2 am.

Finca Tres Robles "Farm & Firelight: A Sustainable New Year's Celebration"
If you're in the mood for an all-natural, outdoorsy, New Year's Eve party, here we have "Farm & Firelight: A Sustainable New Year's Celebration." Guests can cozy up around bonfires whose ashes go into the farm's compost to help feed the East End, roast marshmallows and drink hot toddies & craft beer from Sigma Brewing Co. 8 pm-1 am.

"Totally Awesome '90s New Year's Eve Party" at MKT Bar
The bar will have a "Totally Awesome '90s New Year's Eve Party," complete with a champagne menu, food specials and dance-off prizes. Kay Allah and Mohawk Steve will be spinning the music, and we're sure they'll be playing tunes that'll have people doing such '90s dance crazes as the Macarena, the Humpty Dance, and even the Bartman. 8 pm-2 am.

"New Year's Comedy Jam" with Cedric the Entertainer and D.L. Hughley
Wouldn't you like to leave 2018 with a good laugh? Check out a top-notch collection of comedians ready to make you chuckle over at the "New Year's Comedy Jam." Expect two Original Kings of Comedy — Cedric the Entertainer and D.L. Hughley — along with Arnez J and Nephew Tommy. 8 pm.

New Year's Eve at the Crystal Ballroom at Rice Lofts
The ballroom and Lawless Spirits and Kitchen will be joining forces for one, big, blowout NYE bash. General admission tickets will get guests into the ultimate and all-inclusive party at the ballroom. Guests can upgrade their tickets with a pass into the adjoining, intimate and glamorous Lawless. 9 pm.

"Year of the Bo$$ 2K19 NYE Celebration" with Slim Thug
Welcome in the new year with Slim Thug and his crew, as they will be the headliners for the "Year of the Bo$$ 2K19 NYE Celebration." You can head in early for happy hour, from 5 to 7 pm. There will also be a chef-created, á la carte dining menu, available until 8pm. (The lounge menu will be available until 11pm.) 9 pm.

Sober Eve 2018 at The Story Houston
If you would like to ring in the new year with a clear head, this spot will have "Sober Eve 2018." The shindig will have all the familiar accoutrements of a NYE party — music, flashing lights, confetti dropping at midnight — except there won't be any drugs or alcohol. It's perfect for people who want to drive home safely. 9 pm-1 am.

    Fireworks at CityCentre
What New Year's Eve isn't complete without fireworks? This event will have a countdown to midnight that will be capped off with confetti and a 60-second, rooftop fireworks show, which we're sure will be a spectacular sight. There'll also be a live performance in the plaza from five-piece, variety dance band A Sure Thing. 9:30 pm.

Star TV producer James L. Brooks stumbles with meandering movie Ella McCay

    Emma Mackey in Ella McCay.

The impact that writer/director/producer James L. Brooks has made on Hollywood cannot be understated. The 85-year-old created The Mary Tyler Moore Show, personally won three Oscars for Terms of Endearment, and was one of the driving forces behind The Simpsons, among many other credits. Now, 15 years after his last movie, he’s back in the directing chair with Ella McCay.

The similarly-named Emma Mackey plays Ella, a 34-year-old lieutenant governor of an unnamed state in 2008 who’s on the verge of becoming governor when Governor Bill (Albert Brooks) gets picked to be a member of the president’s Cabinet. What should be a happy time is sullied by her needy husband, Ryan (Jack Lowden), her agoraphobic brother, Casey (Spike Fearn), and her perpetually-cheating father, Eddie (Woody Harrelson).

Despite the trio of men competing to bring her down, Ella remains an unapologetic optimist, an attitude bolstered by her aunt Helen (Jamie Lee Curtis), her assistant Estelle (Julie Kavner), and her police escort, Trooper Nash (Kumail Nanjiani). The film follows her over a few days as she navigates the perils of governing, the distractions her family brings, and the expectations being thrust upon her by many different people.

Brooks, who wrote and directed the film, is all over the place with his storytelling. What at first seems to be a straightforward story about Ella and her various issues soon starts meandering into areas that, while related to Ella, don’t make the film better. Prime among them are her brother and father, who are given a relatively small amount of screentime in comparison to the importance they have in her life. This is compounded by a confounding subplot in which Casey tries to win back his girlfriend, Susan (Ayo Edebiri).

Then there’s the whole political side of the story, which never finds its focus and is stuck in the past. Though it’s never stated explicitly, Ella and Governor Bill appear to be Democrats, especially given a signature program Ella pushes to help mothers in need. But if Brooks was trying to provide an antidote to the current real world politics, he doesn’t succeed, as Ella’s full goals are never clear. He also inexplicably shows her boring her fellow lawmakers to tears, a strange trait to give the person for whom the audience is supposed to be rooting.

What saves the movie from being an all-out train wreck is the performances of Mackey and Curtis. Mackey, best known for the Netflix show Sex Education, has an assured confidence to her that keeps the character interesting and likable even when the story goes downhill. Curtis, who has tended to go over-the-top with her roles in recent years, tones it down, offering a warm place of comfort for Ella to turn to when she needs it. The two complement each other very well and are the best parts of the movie by far.

Brooks puts much more effort into his female actors, including Kavner, who, even though she serves as an unnecessary narrator, gets most of the best laugh lines in the film. Harrelson is capable of playing a great cad, but his character here isn’t fleshed out enough. Fearn is super annoying in his role, and Lowden isn’t much better, although that could be mostly due to what his character is called to do. Were it not for the always-great Brooks and Nanjiani, the movie might be devoid of good male performances.

Brooks has made many great TV shows and movies in his 60+ year career, but Ella McCay is a far cry from his best. The only positive that comes out of it is the boosting of Mackey, who proves herself capable of not only leading a film, but also elevating one that would otherwise be a slog to get through.

    ---

Ella McCay opens in theaters on December 12.
