Houston is our favorite city, natch, but we know those who have never been lucky enough to come here don't always have the best impression. (We think all the complaining we do about the heat, humidity, flooding and mosquitos has something to do with it.) So it looks like someone from Travel + Leisure finally made the trip, because Houston has blown onto their "America's Favorite Cities 2009" list in a big way.
Shut out from the list of 30 in past years, Houston shoots to the Top Ten in many of the categories. For people, we rate #8 for attractive, #4 for diverse, #7 for friendly and #6 for stylish.
Houston was #1 overall in affordable hotels, and when it comes to food, nightlife, shopping and culture, we rank in the Top Ten in cocktail hour (9), singles/bar scene (8), classical music (5), theater (5), museums/galleries (8), luxury stores (5), independent boutiques (9), antique and vintage shops (8), big-name restaurants (6), and ethnic food (8).
Plus our airports also cleaned up, scoring in the top three in seven out of nine rankings.
The only category where Houston truly bombs is public transportation and pedestrian-friendliness, coming in at # 27.
And if that's not enough cause to celebrate, Houston also outscored Dallas... in every single category.
