At Houston Zoo
The most unique Father's Day idea ever? It's all about building, but not bridges
Father's Day is an often discounted and disregarded holiday. It can be difficult to find something new and different to do on dad's dad.
Dad may want to kick back and watch TV, but what fun is that? Maybe a trip to the Houston Zoo for some LEGO whimsy is in order.
The zoo launched the creative exhibit LEGO: Animals Assembled in May and on Father's Day, kids and dads (moms too) are invited to party amid the two dozen life-sized LEGO animals during special Father's Day festivities from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The frolic through the exhibit includes building your own LEGO art on the art wall, participating in a LEGO scavenger hunt and more.
Constructed by LEGO Certified Master Builders, each animal in the exhibit, which is sponsored by Fiesta, is life-sized with more than two dozen animal sculptures representing more than 10 species including flamingos, a tiger, zebra, baby rhino and more. The tiger sculpture alone took 33,000 bricks and 200 hours to complete.
On a recent Houston Zoo visit, CultureMap found handfuls of kids in summer camps or with their families following the pathway through the shaded exhibit. Most of them were "oohing" and "ahhing" at the colorful depictions. Even the adults stopped to snap pictures and to inspect the ingenuity of it all.
The Father's Day event and viewing the exhibit on other days (it will be up through Labor Day) is included with zoo admission.
