Icy weather forces social event cancellations & school closings: See list here
Freezing temperatures and the threat of snow have turned an evening packed with social events into a stay at home with grilled cheese and tomato soup kind of night.
What had been the type of Thursday that had social butterflies wringing their hands over what to attend has fast become move-night, thanks to a string of weather-caused cancelations.
The CAMH studio opening reception at the Colton & Farb gallery has been canceled and rescheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 9 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. (The museum plans to close at 5 p.m. Thursday.)
The Girls Just Wanna Have Fun event, a '70s-themed benefit for Ronald McDonald House to have taken place Thursday night at the Hilton Americas, has also been canceled.
The chichi Legends Underwriters Party, to be held at the home of Sue and Lester Smith, has been postponed until Feb. 17.
The gallery talk scheduled for noon Friday in conjunction with Rice University Art Gallery's Northwest Corner, Southeast Lightexhibition is also canceled.
The Menil Collection's Vija Celmins: Television and Disaster, 1964 - 1966 gallery talk by associate curator Michelle White has been rescheduled for Thursday, Feb. 17 at 12 p.m.
Spacetaker's Cultured Cocktails at Boheme, benefiting Dance Source Houston, has been rescheduled for Thursday, April 28
The Houston Ballet VIP kick-off party at Versace to take place tonight has been rescheduled for Monday.
HSPVA's Thursday and Friday productions of Smokey Joe's Cafe have been canceled. Tickets to those shows will be honored at the Saturday and Sunday performances.
The Junior League's Casino Royale “A Night at the Tables” cocktail party has been canceled.
The Blondes vs. Brunettes recruiting party has been rescheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 9 at Armadillo Palace from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
In addition, HISD has announced that all classes are canceled Friday, and the Houston Zoo alerted patrons that it would close it gates early Thursday at 3 p.m. Both Hobby and Bush Intercontinental airports also plan to suspend air service in the late afternoon.
The City of Houston is having its employees take tomorrow as a furlough, and Houston Public Library branches will close at 6 p.m. Thursday and remain closed on Friday.
The University of Houston will end classes at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, and the University of St. Thomas has canceled Friday classes and Thursday classes after 12:30 p.m. South Texas College of Law ceased classes at 12 p.m. Houston Community College has canceled Thursday classes after 3 p.m. and all Friday classes.
The Houston Museum of Natural Science will close Thursday at 3 p.m. It plans to open Friday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.
The Holocaust Museum will close at 3 p.m., with plans to reopen at noon on Friday.
The Museum of Fine Arts Houston is maintaining its regular schedule. It is open until 9 p.m. (free admission on Thursdays), with the DJ Spooky event at Brown Auditorium Theater and a private kickoff event for the Latin American Experience Gala weekend tonight. However, the Glassell Studio School is closed. Classes will resume Saturday. Classes at the Glassell Junior school will resume Monday. UPDATE: The museum closed on Friday and a Friday night screening of Texas Legends, Before They Were Legends has been canceled.
However, all specialty clinics at Ben Taub General Hospital, Lyndon B. Johnson General Hospital and Quentin Mease Community Hospital will be closed.
The Riverside Dialysis Center will remain open.
