Puppy Love
Houston's most popular dog names reflect our local love of sports and spirits
We Houstonians have pride, and one of the ways we show it is by what we name our dogs. Rover.com, the nation's largest network of pet sitters and dog walkers, dug through the hundreds of thousands of names in its database to come up with the nation's top 10 male and female dog names, as well as those you might hear being called at a Houston dog park.
Though human names are still skyrocketing in popularity, here in Houston those are a little more likely to reflect Texas celebrities. JJ (as in Watt) is up a whopping 85 percent, though it's actually Dallas that boasts the most Beyoncés.
Our love of sports has not dimmed, however, with Houston up by 65 percent and Astros up 134 percent. But the name that's really gaining traction in H-Town? Tequila, which saw a 106 percent jump in popularity. Hey, it was kind of a rough year.
But overall owners are still 28 percent more likely to name their furkids as if they were human children. The most popular male dog name in the nation is Max, followed by Charlie, Buddy, Cooper, and Jack (though Houston opts for Rocky and Duke in the fourth and fifth spots). For female pups, Bella soars to No. 1 with Lucy, Daisy, Lola, and Luna close behind. Sub Sadie in for Luna, and you've got Houston's top five.
