Mod Squad Homes
Eight fab modern dwellings open their doors Saturday with architects leading the tour
Modern Architecture + Design Society (MA+DS, formerly Modern Home Tours) is hosting the sixth annual tour of modern homes on Saturday, September 24. This year's designs include eight homes that are peppered around Memorial Drive, Montrose, the Museum District and Bellaire. Throughout the tour, attendees will have the opportunity to meet the homes' architects, including MaRS Culture, Intexure Architects, MERGE Architects, and Dreamscape Modern.
The name change happened over the summer to reflect a slightly upgraded version of the organization, described by a press release as "a new multimedia property that aims to create a vibrant, global community of modern architecture and design enthusiasts through multiple platforms that inspire engagement with the people, places and things that define the 'modern' movement,"
Showcasing "modern residential architecture" remains the fundamental mission, Veep Ken Shallcross said on a phone call from New York, but MA+DS will make its online presence more interactive, with the exhibition of homes that could not be on the regular tour. MA+DS organizes tours in Calgary, Vancouver, Austin, Denver, Seattle, Portland, San Diego, Los Angeles and Silicon Valley.
Staffing at the Houston tour is being provided by Lawndale Art Center, which, for the fifth year in a row, is the tour's non-profit beneficiary. Tickets are $35 in advance, $40 on the day of the tour; children under 12 are free when they accompany their parents. Details on the tour route, parking, traffic, and etiquette are provided via email when you purchase tickets, which you can do at mads.media (and yes, ".media" is now an acceptable ending for a URL ... modern, indeed).
