    Historic Mansion On Sale

Historic Montrose mansion goes on sale for $3.5 million: Old world charm included

Editor's Note: Houston is loaded with must-have houses for sale in all shapes, sizes and price ranges. In this continuing series, CultureMap snoops through some of the best and gives you the lowdown on what's hot on the market.

A piece of Houston's history just went up for sale: The Waldo Mansion in Montrose.

    201 Westmoreland

Confederate veteran J.P. Waldo and wife Mary Virginia Gentry, daughter of railroad promoter Abram Gentry, first built this magnificent house in 1885 at the corner of Rusk and Caroline. In 1905, Waldo's son Wilmer moved the residence to its current location, 201 Westmoreland, where it now nestles on a 25,000-square-foot corner lot among mature trees, lush lawn and landscaping and decorative iron-fenced privacy. Period detail and elegance is found everywhere inside the 6,598-square-foot residence.

    Walk Through

Past the charming wrap-around veranda, enter through stained-glass interior doors protected by an exterior and insulating double-door vestibule to a stately ambiance reaching from original wood floors all the way to the top of the 15-foot-high ceilings. In fact, you'll find authentic wood elements from the flooring to wall panels and door and window frames throughout, all in immaculate condition.

To the right, a study awaits the gentleman — and gentlewoman — of the house, while to the left, a living room with working jet-gas fireplace awaits. Step into the dining room, where a vintage chandelier casts its warm glow over the large room. A modern kitchen is close at hand, with plenty of room for catering parties. Downstairs is roomy wine storage for those favorite beverages.

Upstairs via either of two elegant, curving staircases, new carpet covers the floors, and 14-foot ceilings house the three bedrooms. The master bedroom includes a sitting area and luxurious bath with marble columns on either side of a center bathtub that sits directly in front of a fireplace with mantel. In total, the house features 10 gas fireplaces, with one mock in the entry hall. A lofted-ceiling cubby on the third floor is now designated as a media room.

    Step Outside

The private courtyard is a place to relax to the sounds of a fountain with goldfish pond guarded by towering palm trees. A detached 1600-square-foot guest house has two to three bedrooms and two baths. Additional bonus: A three-car garage with a large gated motor court sit to the side of the mansion.

    Square footage: 6,598

    Asking price: $3.5 million

Listing agent: Richard Ray, John Daugherty, Realtors

2 Houston suburbs rank among fastest-growing affordable cities in U.S.

This charming home in League City is on the market for $347,000.

A new national study has declared Texas is home to the most affordable, fast-growing cities in the country, and two Houston-area cities – League City and Pearland – make the list.

League City ranked No. 7 and Pearland ranked 11th on GoBankingRates.com's new list of "50 Most Affordable, Fastest-Growing Cities in 2025."

The Dallas suburb Frisco tops the national rankings at No. 1, and three more North Texas cities appear on the top 10: The North Texas cities of McKinney (No. 2), Allen (No. 5), and Lewisville (No. 8). Round Rock, a North Austin suburb, rounds out the top 10.

The personal finance website's experts analyzed U.S. cities to find the most affordable places with large population growth based one-year and five-year population growth rates higher than the national average. Additional factors considered include each city's median household income, average home values, average rental cost, and average mortgage cost.

League City's population grew nearly 14 percent over the last five years, though it does appear to be slowing down as the suburb's one-year growth rate was only 1.3 percent. Residents make a median household income of $119,870 annually, and the average home value in the city is a little more than $369,000, the report found.

The study also determined the total cost of living for a League City homeowner comes out to $47,459 annually. Renters have a cheaper cost of living, totaling $44,264 per year.

No. 11-ranked Pearland had a five-year population growth rate of 6.9 percent, a figure that is sure to grow further now that it's known as one of the best places to live in the U.S. The study also found the average Pearland home is valued at more than $376,000, which at first glance isn't as affordable as other Houston-area cities. However, GoBankingRates deems this "affordable" since the median Pearland household income is $112,470.

Five more Texas cities earned spots in the report: The North Texas cities Denton (No. 19) and Fort Worth (No. 26); Austin (No. 35); the Rio Grande Valley city of Edinburg (No. 43); and Central Texas city Killeen (No. 49).
