Legendary Houston steakhouse relocates to new 2-story downtown digs

    Sep 29, 2021 | 2:00 pm

Downtown's newest steakhouse arrives this week. The Palm opens to the public on Friday, October 1.

As CultureMap reported in August, The Palm recently closed its 43-year old, original location on Westheimer in favor of taking over the former III Forks space in downtown's GreenStreet development (1201 Fannin St.). The two-story, 230-seat restaurant will still feature the brand's familiar caricatures and murals but with an updated look. Downtown also offers more private dining options, including five rooms and a table for six at the restaurant's baby grand piano.

To ensure a smooth transition between the old and new locations, The Palm recruited longtime general manager Jimmy Martin to work the room as maître‘d.

“I’m thrilled to rejoin The Palm family at this wonderful new location,” Martin said in a statement. “As an original member of the Houston team, I look forward to preserving the signature atmosphere and elevated experience our patrons have treasured at The Palm for more than 40 years.”

The downtown location debuts with new dishes created by executive concept chef Michael Coury and executive chef Jim Krauss. While the menu remains anchored by its USDA Prime steaks and giant, Nova Scotia lobsters, the chefs have introduced new options that expand on the restaurant's Italian-American fare. They include Martin’s original recipe for veal chop parmesan made with prosciutto, fresh basil, and fontina cheese as well as Seafood Posillipo that features one-and-a-half pounds of lobster, clams, and shrimp over squid ink pasta in posillipo sauce.

“The move to GreenStreet presented the perfect opportunity for The Palm. We are thrilled to revitalize this legendary restaurant at its new location in the heart of downtown Houston,” said James Hamilton, vice president of Palm Restaurants. “Guests can look forward to an array of innovative, chef-curated offerings, in addition to The Palm’s classic offerings in a lively, modern environment.”

Houston-based hospitality juggernaut Landry's, Inc. acquired The Palm in early 2020. Once the restaurant opens, Landry's will have three upscale steakhouses downtown with Morton's and Vic & Anthony's. In total, the Palm has 18 locations worldwide.

The downtown location will be open for lunch Monday-Friday and dinner daily.

James Beard-winning chef opens 26-seat new restaurant in the Heights

An intimate new restaurant with a James Beard Award-winning chef is coming to the Heights. The Green Room will open for dinner on Thursday, March 5.

Located within the same building as Heights & Co. (1343 Yale St.), the Green Room is a 26-seat, fine dining restaurant with a European-inspired menu. Part of Doke Concepts (Heights & Co., Lazy Lane), the restaurant is led by chef-partner Daniel Davidson and chef de cuisine Tom Cunanan, who won Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic in the 2019 James Beard Awards for Bad Saint, a pioneering Filipino restaurant in Washington, D.C. Sous chef Skyler Bancroft comes to the Green Room from Bludorn Hospitality.

“We’ve always believed Houston deserves experiences that feel exciting but never intimidating,” co-owner Brian Doke said in a statement. “With The Green Room, we set out to create something ambitious yet approachable, where the food is elevated, the wine over delivers and hospitality feels personal from the moment you walk in.”

The menu includes the chefs’ takes on staples of contemporary fine dining, such as scallop crudo, sliced hamachi, crispy duck, and roast chicken with salsa verde. Other dishes include salmon en croute, smoked bucatini with shrimp, and an heirloom tomato tarte tatin.

In addition to its a la carte menu, the Green Room will offer a five-course Chef’s Dinner Party Menu that will include dishes not on the regular menu and a glass of wine or a cocktail. Both menus are expected to change monthly.

The wine list will include both grower champagne and certified organic producers, most of which will be priced at $100 per less or bottle. A separate Cellar Series will feature premium by-the-glass options. They’ll be joined by a range of classic cocktails.

“It’s no secret that Houstonians are looking for new experiences when dining out,” the restaurant’s partners added. “We’re trying to meet them where they are, where the experience feels curated without being pretentious and elevated without losing warmth.”

In November, Doke and Davidson opened Lazy Lane in Garden Oaks. The neighborhood restaurant serves steak, pizza, pasta, and more.
