    Welcome Harold's Tap Room

    Downstairs bar in Heights Southern restaurant sets opening date

    An eagerly-anticipated new destination for eating and drinking has arrived even more quickly than expected. Less than two months after announcing its project to turn its downstairs market into a shotgun bar and tap room, Harold's in the Heights has set May 19 as the bar's official opening day.

    Between seats at the bar, a lounge area, and a covered outdoor space, the 1,300-square foot room adds about 50 seats to Harold's and serves as a 19th. Street-facing entrance for the restaurant.

    "We are thrilled to add a welcoming new entrance to Harold’s with the addition of the Tap Room,” said owner Alli Jarrett in a statement. “The shotgun-style bar will be a gathering place for locals and guests alike to sit back, relax and let the time pass while they enjoy great drinks and locally-sourced food without breaking the bank."

    Any bar's appeal starts with drinks, and Harold's plans to build on its farm to table reputation with its cocktail menu. Manager Lauren Muse worked with Jarrett and executive chef Antoine Ware to develop cocktails that utilize spirits infused with the same fresh produce that Ware uses in the kitchen. Designed for two people to share, the Double Feature allows patrons to create an infused cocktail by choosing a Texas soda to pair with fresh, seasonal spices and fruits.

    In addition to cocktails, Harold's Tap Room serves craft beer from locals like Karbach, Saint Arnold, and Town in City, as well as eight wines on tap. Both beers and wines are available as flights to allow patrons to taste the selection and discover a new favorite.

    Last month, Ware promised a menu made up of items with "high acid, high salt (that will) keep everybody drinking." That goal has been realized with dishes like sweet and spicy wings (Valentina hot sauce and local honey), redneck sliders (fried bologna sandwich), a "big ass meatball," and pizzas from neighboring Alli's Pizzaria.

    Area residents who want to check out the newcomer should keep an eye on the building. If a final permit approval comes in, Harold's Tap Room could begin its soft opening as soon as Friday night.

    Harold's Tap Room will be open Tuesday and Wednesday from 11 am until 11 pm; Thursday and Friday 11 am until 2 am; Saturday 10 am until 2 am; and Sunday 10 am until 11 pm. Food service ends one hour before closing.

    Food experts draft the best dishes at Vietnamese restaurants in Houston

    On this week’s episode of “What’s Eric Eating,” CultureMap editor Eric Sandler recruited five of his friends and colleagues to select their favorite dishes at Vietnamese restaurants in Houston via a fantasy football-style draft.



    The panelists — Stevie Vu of the Chowdown in Chinatown Facebook group and Asia Society, Texas; Chelsea Thomas of Local Foods Group; Heights Grocer and Montrose Grocer owner Mary Clarkson; Have A Nice Day AAPI pop-up market co-founder Isabel Protomartir; Houston BBQ Festival co-founder Michael Fulmer — joined Sandler to draft Vietnamese dishes and restaurants in six categories. They are:

    • Appetizer/Salad
    • Entree
    • Sandwich
    • Soup
    • Viet-Cajun
    • Wildcard

    In the first round, Vu kicked things off by selecting the sandwiches from Chinatown institution Nguyen Ngo. Thomas followed with the duck salad at Thien An. Clarkson took the mango-papaya salad from Old Saigon Cafe, and Sandler scored the Beef 7 Ways at Chinatown favorite Saigon Pagolac. Protomartir took the Duck House’s crispy egg rolls, and Fulmer closed round one with the beef rolls at Nam Giao, which holds a Bib Gourmand designation in the Michelin Guide.

    As he noted, the draft results include some of Houston’s most prominent Vietnamese restaurant as well as a few under-the-radar choices that will give listeners some new options to try. Listen to the full episode on any podcast platform to hear the panelists explain the choices and recommend a few places that they could have drafted instead.



    In this week’s second episode, chef Christine Ha and her husband John Suh join Sandler to review the results and pick a winner. Since no one selected their restaurant The Blind Goat, each drafter is on an equal footing.
