Cesar Galindo is working on a Fashion Week for Houston
Dec 7, 2009 | 9:27 pm
Houston native and high-fashion talent Cesar Galindo had plans, big plans for this city's fashion world.
The New York-based designer is working with several local entities, including the Convention and Entertainment Facilities Department and Momentum Audi, to bring Fashion Week — å la New York, Paris and London — to the Bayou City.
In the planning stages, the delicious dream is to have a full week of fashion-oriented activities next fall, including three days of back-to-back runway shows, rounds of parties and a red carpet kick-off. Galindo is working with a handful of American designers, including Calvin Klein and Donna Karan, in an effort to entice at least 10 big designers and new fashion names to join the party. The goal is to put Houston on the map as a style leader, certainly in Texas if not in the country. Stay tuned as details develop.
40 times three
When Katharine and Stephen Newman, Mouth Watering Media CEO, began casting about for a place to mutually celebrate their 40th birthdays, the decision came easily. They settled on one of their favorite music venues — Anderson Fair, the iconic club in Montrose that just happened to be marking four decades of hosting original Texas music performances.
The Newmans took over Anderson Fair Saturday night for the triple-header celebration of their birthdays and the club's rich musical heritage. To that end, the Shake Russell Trio entertained with tunes such as Travelin' Texas (theme song for the late Ron Stone's show The Eyes of Texas), Deep in the West and That Wandering Indian. Music that kept the party rocking in the club that even today wears a slight hint of weed.
None of that funny stuff Saturday night. The beer and wine flowed while guests grazed through a field of Houston Tamale Co. treats and sliders from Little Bigs. Making the scene were ConocoPhillips deputy general counsels Ralph Burch and William McClain and wife Lisa plus Ann and Don Short, Susan and Dick Hansen, Jody and Russell Radoff, Misty and Tyson Weihs, Kate and Greg Scheinman and Karen and Steve Farber.
A million reasons
Nancy and Rich Kinder, who hold the purse strings to the generous Kinder Foundation, have provided the lead gift of $1 million to the Cristo Rey Jesuit College Preparatory School for its future capital campaign. The gift was announced by school president the Rev. T.J. Martinez at a cocktail reception for the school's Committee for Houston's Future.
Among those saluting the Kinder philanthropy were Trini Mendenhall-Sosa and Frank Sosa, Cindy and Harry Holmes, Kerri and Downey Bridgwater, Carol Beck, Archbishop Emeritus Joseph Fiorenza, Lynne Benson and Gwen and Larry Melody.
The ultimate party boy
It was billed as Jared Lang's "Not So Silent Night" holiday bash and those who attended Friday's party at Winter Street Studios would agree that the action lived up to expectations. Close to 400 revelers braved the icy temps to raise funds and collect toys for AIDS Foundation Houston and Child Advocates. And to raise the roof.
Two bands, a DJ and Page Parkes models (dressed as Santa's helpers, toy soldiers and elves) provided color. Guests included Uchenna Agu, Roseann Rogers, Michael Stribling, Katherine Orellana, David Cordua, Dr. Lucho Rossman, Kristen Cannon, Ashley Allen and Hahn Tran.
Adding to the party fun were sponsors that included Momentum Audi, Silver Eagle Distributors, Hudson Ferus Vodka and Riazul Premium Tequila.
The horsey set
All eyes were on the dreamy baubles and beads at Valobra Fine Italian Jewelry last week when the Pin Oak Charity Horse Show held a holiday celebration at the Highland Village emporium. Part of the fun was eyeing the $20,000 bauble that Franco Valobra is donating for a raffle for the show that will be held in March.
Chatting up the 2010 horse show that is expected to raise $100,000 for charity were BBVA Compass Bank's Rick Terry, Bisso Marine's Eva and Beau Bisso, Darlene and Cappy Bisso, R.O. Hunton and Alta and Dr. Martin Basaldua.
Sight 'ems
