Party of the year brings out disco fever & rumors of Rod Stewart
Cries of "Party of the Year" resonated across the pulsating dance floor at the Corinthian where Trini Mendenhall Sosa celebrated her 60th birthday in retro '70s style. Forget Studio 54. This was "Studio 60" where guests fashionably relived that era of Afros, Pucci prints and platform shoes.
Even though it was Friday, there was plenty of Saturday night fever at play in this crowd that never stopped dancing.
Probably no one was more into theme than the birthday girl's husband, Frank Sosa, who donned an Afro wig and white suit and dyed his graying goatee black. He claimed to be channeling Al Pacino in Scarface.
Well, perhaps the most convincing costuming was that of Trini's son, Oneil Mendenhall, who orchestrated the party. He too went all out in white silk and a wig a la John Travolta. His wife, Jan, coursed through the party scene on roller skates, her faux braids flapping in the party breeze.
What made this soirée rock were the disco decor by Darryl Murchison and the endless Vegas-style entertainment. Beefcake boys gyrated atop white pedestals. Fog filled the dance floor. "Liza Minnelli" strolled through. Professional dancers shook their booties.
When "Rod Stewart" descended the staircase, more than a few hearts momentarily stopped. When singer Mary Griffin jumped from the gilded bier to sing "It's Raining Men," party goers went mad. The silver and gold streamers popping from guns overhead only added to the playful mayhem.
Martha Turner, we hardly knew you in your pink wig, wicked faux glasses and that cocktail dress from the '70s. Tony Mandola stepped far outside of his comfort zone in a glittering jacket he picked up only hours earlier at The Way We Wore. University of St. Thomas president Bob Ivany wore his son's dress uniform from West Point (his own being carefully guarded by his mother). Glittery, thigh-high dresses prevailed.
And as Sten Gustafson pointed out, Lester Smith was the only guy in black satin and crystals who took his costume straight from his closet. Sue Smith and Lester clearly loved the disco tunes, particularly his theme song, "I Will Survive."
The kudos poured in for Paul-David Van Atta, who took a night off from his gig at the Hilton Americas-Houston to create this party masterpiece. And, of course, there was the bountiful buffet by Jackson & Co. and a wait staff that kept the liquids flowing throughout.
On and off the dance floor, we spotted Carol Sawyer, Merrill and Joe Hafner, Sofia Adrogué, Francie and Mike Willis, Ileana and Michael Trevino, Cindy Burns, Sonny and Jody Giles, Patty Herrera, Lucia and Michael Cordua, Ed Smith, Patty Dominguez and Scott Evans with Jeff Henry.
