Private Practice's Kate Walsh headlines HRC gala, but 17-year-old Houstoniansteals the show
They might have been billed as the stars of the Human Rights Campaign annual gala, but glamorous actressKate Walsh of Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice fame and Scott Nevins of The Smoking Gun Presents took a backseat to the emotionally riveting speech by 17-year-old Tommy Suratt, the son of two gay fathers.
With his dads, Mike Holloman and Tim Surratt in the audience, Tommy poignantly shared his daily struggles as a straight teen promoting gay rights while attending an all-boy's Catholic school. He received a standing ovation from the gathering in the ballroom of the Hilton Americas-Houston. This was not his first black-tie rodeo as Tommy has attended more than 30 charitable fundraising galas since he was 5 years old, thanks to the social activism of his fathers.
Also in the spotlight was Mayor Annise Parker, accompanied by her partner Kathy Hubbard, who received the John Walzel Political Equality Award.
The evening, chaired by Tiffany Tosh, Jon Denning and LaRence Snowden, raised funds for HRC's civil rights initiatives in working to achieve equality for gays, lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals.
Notables in the mix included KPRC Channel 2 meteorologist Frank Billingsley, Jenifer Rene Pool, U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, Ellen Cohen, City Councilwoman Jolanda Jones, Christina Gorczynski, Maverick Welsh, Kris Banks, VIctor Castillo, Nikki Araguz, Bryan Hlavinka, Shondra Wygal and Judge Steven Kirkland.
Earlier in the day, Kate Walsh made a public appearance at Sephora in the Galleria where she promoted her new fragrance, Boyfriend.
