Heart Ball breaks the $1 million mark — thanks to Mattress Mack and 100 special mattresses
What: The American Heart Association's Montgomery County Heart Ball.

The 411: The gala crowd of 800 raised more than $1 million making this the most successful Montgomery County Heart Ball in its 20-year history. The silent and live auctions raised $455, 000 thanks in no small part to auctioneer Jim "Mattress Mack" McIngvale, who in a surprise move added 100 Tempur-Pedic mattresses to the live auction offerings. With that the auction paddles flew into the air.
KTRK Channel 13 Ted Oberg served as emcee of the "Flaps, Spats and Top Hats" evening that channeled the Roaring '20s. Linda McIngvale's company, A Memorable Event, transformed the ballroom into a glamorous speakeasy. Many in the black-tie crowd followed the theme by dressing in flapper style.
Key players were gala chairs Sherry and Richard Lane, president and CEO of Vitruvian Exploration, and honoree Dr. Mark Mettauer.
