Mardi Gras goes cowboy: George Mitchell shakes up the party with a Tremont House waltz
Galveston might have adopted the "Jazz, Jazz, Jazz" theme for its 2013 Mardi Gras celebrations, but George Mitchell, venerable king of the island's Mardi Gras, opted for a Western theme for his 29th annual Tremont House Ball.
Reigning over the festivities from his wheelchair, Mitchell joined the "Waltz Across Texas" festivities wearing colorful western garb. The look fit right in with the night's entertainment that included rockabilly starJesse Dayton and Grammy Award-winner Ray Benson and Asleep at the Wheel.
Setting the western theme in the lobby was a larger-than-life Old Tex in neon.
After the Knights of Momus parade passed by and revelers captured their fill of beads and tokens, the crowd left the curbside perch for a night of dining and dancing in the Tremont ballroom. Setting the western theme in the lobby was a larger-than-life Old Tex in neon.
The Mitchell clan attending included Grant Mitchell and wife Tiziana, Sheridan Mitchell Lorenz and Perry Lorenz, Michael Mitchell, Betsy and Greg Mitchell, Lori Mitchell and Brenda Mitchell.
Dressing for the western-themed bash were Janie and Dick DeGuerin, Kevin Gilliard and Frank Billingsley, Janice Hurst, Marika and Kerry Rudy, Meredith and Serge Brethe, Pam Golightly, Donna and John Williams and Scott Chaplin.
