New Houston restaurant serves up steaks, sushi, and retro vibes

A Dallas restaurant that serves up classic American fare will soon make its Houston debut. Drake’s Hollywood will open Thursday, August 29 in the former Underbelly/Georgia James space at 1100 Westheimer.

Expect to see an order of Vin Scully fries on every table.

Part of Vandelay Hospitality, the restaurant group behind East Coast-inspired River Oaks restaurant Hudson House, Drake’s takes inspiration from retro Hollywood glam. The interior features red leather booths and a colorful mural that depicts movie stars past and present.

“I always like to say Drake’s is the greatest third date spot in America,” Vandelay founder Hunter Pond says with a laugh. “Our restaurants fit certain moods. When you’re in the mood to go to Drake’s, it’s a unique mood. You’re ready to go out, have fun, have an extra martini than you usually do, and have good American food made with classic recipes.”

Although that “good American food” includes a selection of dry-aged and wagyu steaks, Pond doesn’t think of Drake’s as a steakhouse. After all, the restaurant also serves pizza, sushi, and entrees such as the signature Pasta Za Za, a baked rigatoni in a spicy tomato sauce. Pond notes that nearly every table opts for a plate of Vin Scully Fries — curly fries topped with smoked cheddar, bacon, jalapenos, chives, and ranch dressing.

“It’s a gluttonous dish, but it’s awesome,” he says.

Of course, the same “World’s Coldest Martinis” that have been so well received at Hudson House are available at Drake’s, too.

The decision to bring Drake’s to Houston came after Pond and his business partners purchased the property at 1100 Westheimer. They’ve transformed the space, claiming most of what had been Underbelly and Hay Merchant for the new restaurant. However, they left approximately 2,000-square-feet for a piano lounge that will open later this fall, Pond reveals.

“When the opportunity was brought to me by my real estate partners, they said, ‘it’s an iconic piece of real estate, should we buy it?’ I said, ‘hell yeah, we should buy it.’ I love the location,” he says. “We appeal to such a wide variety of diners that I thought the central location was a great fit for that concept.”

Vandelay initially brought its East Hampton Sandwich Company to Houston in 2017. While that effort didn’t succeed, Hudson House has been a smash hit. The company has already signed a lease to bring a second location to Rice Village in the coming months.

“It’s exploded. We’ve been so fortunate that it’s been received the way it has,” Pond says. “It’s really confirmed my initial though that Vandelay could succeed in Houston.”

6 Rice Village restaurants team up to support Houston hospitality nonprofit

Some of Rice Village’s top restaurants have teamed up to raise money for the Southern Smoke Foundation. Dine Out Rice Village is taking place through January 31.

Modeled after Houston Restaurant Weeks, each restaurant is serving a prix fixe menu at a set price that includes a donation to Southern Smoke, the Houston-based non-profit that provides emergency assistance and mental health services to hospitality workers.

“January is typically a slower month for restaurants, so if we can encourage folks to go out to eat and simultaneously raise funds for the people growing, cooking, and serving the food and drinks, it’s a win/win all around,” Southern Smoke executive director Lindsey Brown said. “We hope Dine Out Rice Village becomes an essential event in Houston’s food and beverage annual calendar.”

The participating restaurants are:


  • D’Amico’s: Two-course dinner ($45)
  • Hamsa: Three-course lunch ($25) and four-course dinner ($55)
  • Hudson House: Two-course lunch ($20) and three-course dinner ($55)
  • Mendocino Farms: Golden State Farm Salad (20-percent of sales)
  • Milton’s: Three-course dinner ($55)
  • Navy Blue: Two-course lunch ($35) and three-course dinner ($55)

Navy Blue co-owner Aaron Bludorn first proposed Dine Out Rice Village in 2025. He encourages diners to sample the restaurant’s crispy salmon with pomme puree and butter-braised leeks.

“We created Dine Out Rice Village in concert with Southern Smoke Foundation to showcase all of the amazing restaurants in the neighborhood,” Bludorn said. “We feel that giving Houstonians a reason to visit the Village is all we need to remind them that it is one of the premier dining destinations in Houston.”

Seth Siegel-Gardner, culinary and creative director for Milton’s owner Local Foods Group, echoed Bludorn’s sentiments. “All of us at Local Foods Group love what Southern Smoke Foundation does for our industry locally and around the country,” he said.

“We’re always proud to support the incredible organization, especially because that usually comes with doing something fun for Houston diners. In this case, the set menu is an awesome deal for a great cause. It’s a good excuse to try or revisit Chef Kent’s legendary Chicken Parm.”
