Nancy's in the spotlight
Acclaimed Houston hot spot lands on Esquire's best new restaurants list
Nancy's Hustle is basking in the national spotlight. Esquire magazine ranked the EaDo hotspot third on its list of America's best new restaurants for 2018.
"I don’t know how to categorize the cooking at this place other than to say that Nancy’s Hustle . . . is like a roadside diner in which a bunch of Michelin-starred talents are secretly hiding out, thanks to the witness-protection program," food and drinks editor Jeff Gordinier writes. The author also heaps praise upon the restaurant's signature Nancy cakes (corn cakes served with whipped butter and trout roe), writing that they're "chemically engineered to turn my palate into their willing puppet."
Overall, Texas restaurants earned three spots on the Esquire list. San Antonio's Carnitas Lonja took 10th place, and Dallas restaurant Petra and the Beast ranked lucky number 13. San Francisco restaurant Angler, a seafood-oriented concept from Joshua Skenes (also chef-owner of Michelin three-star tasting menu restaurant Saison) takes the top spot, while New York chef Missy Robins earns chef of the year honors.
It's only the latest acclaim for Nancy's Hustle, which opened late last year under the direction of owners beverage specialist Sean Jensen and chef Jason Vaughn, who earned Rising Star Chef of the Year honors from the CultureMap Tastemaker Awards panel for his work at Nancy's. Thrillist also named the restaurant to its Prime 13 list of America's best new restaurants.
