Ponzo's Closing
Midtown pizza joint that's a fave for "Sunday hangover food" will close this week
Midtown residents only have a few more days to get their fill of pepperoni rolls, cannoli, and meatball subs from Ponzo's Italian American. The restaurant announced on Facebook that it will close October 16.
In a city with lots of high-quality pizza options, Ponzo's stood out for its East Coast-style mix of pizza, calzones, subs, and salads. Inexpensive and casual, the mostly take-out and delivery establishment served simple, unpretentious food. In particular, the substantial pepperoni rolls earned raves from diners. And it won praise from some longtime Houstonians who came for their favorite Sunday hangover food: Pepperoni black olive jalapeño pizza and a slice of chocolate eruption cake, the "Sunday Night Special."
Those looking for similar fare should consider Romano's or Luigi's. Recently opened Pi Pizza offers a more polished take on the Italian-American pizza and sub shop.
The restaurant has yet to respond to CultureMap's request for comment about the decision to close. We'll update this article if we receive a reply.
