Catalan's wine guy Antonio Gianola to create a new concept
He's been the go-to sommelier presiding over some of the most prestigious wine lists in Houston, notably at Da Marco for five years and since 2006 at Catalan, where his expertise earned a nod on Food & Wine Magazine's Best New Wine Lists in 2007.
But as announced over the weekend at the Texas Sommelier Conference (where he was a panel member), Antonio Gianola is leaving Catalan in September to start his own place with wife Melissa.
As reported by Alison Cook, Gianola is in the early stages of looking for a location, either in Montrose, the Museum District or the Heights, and hopes to open by the beginning of the year. (Wow!)
While Gianola has a vision for the wine list — "I'm thinking we'll have about half the list we have here at Catalan, and instead of a 40/60 New World to Old World ratio, the mix will be 20/80," he said — the food portion is still up in the air depending on the space.
Whatever the concept turns out to be, it's undoubedly great news for wine lovers.
