Food fight! The froyo wars heat up in Highland Village as Pinkberry takes onTasti D-Lite
When Pinkberry opened its first Houston-area store in Baybrook last fall, we predicted a battle between the West Coast-based frozen yogurt chain and Tasti D-Lite, its low-cal rival from New York.
Now the ice cream wars are going head-to-head, with Pinkberry announcing a new location in Highland Village opening in late summer, just a stone's throw from Tasti D-Lite. Is the neighborhood big enough for both?
Let's run the numbers once more on who can claim diet dessert supremacy.
Realness: Pinkberry
Unlike Tasti D-Lite, which has to dance around definitions by calling itself a "dairy-based soft serve frozen dessert," Pinkberry contains fermented yogurt cultures and is certified by the National Yogurt Association. Of course "realness" is relative when talking about anything that's sweet without being sugary, unless 'guar gum' is something that comes from nature.
Diet-friendliness: Tasti D-Lite
Maybe because it's not quite ice cream and not quite yogurt, Tasti D-Lite's dozens of flavors all weigh in between 70 and 100 calories per serving, with most coming in at the low end of that spectrum. Most Pinkberry flavors are between 100 and 120 calories.
When it comes to taste, it's a matter of preference: Tasti D-Lite has a mild sweetness that seemed to mimic whipped air, while Pinkberry has a tartness that is true to the original definition of frozen yogurt.
Do you prefer Pinkberry or Tasti D-Lite? Or would you rather stick to Sprinkles?
