National magazine crushes on a Houston mixologist — and it's not who you think
A Houston drinks maker has earned some national attention and — hold the phone — it isn't Bobby Heugel.
Wine Enthusiast magazine named Sean Beck Mixologist of the Month for February 2012. Beck, who runs the beverage programs at Backstreet Cafe, Hugo's and Trevisio, was promoted to sommelier from server during a stint waiting tables at Backstreet during college and has been there ever since. In 2010 he won My Table Awards for Service Person of the Year and Favorite Mixologist.
“I love local, but it can’t be local for local’s sake,” Sean Beck says. “That’s not good enough and that’s always been the problem with Texas wines."
Though he's a fan of Dripping Springs vodka and Texas whiskey, in his profile, Beck talks about his philosophy on supporting local brands:
“I love local, but it can’t be local for local’s sake,” he says. “That’s not good enough and that’s always been the problem with Texas wines. They’ve sold out ferociously, so they haven’t had the pressure to ramp up the quality to where it should be.”
And since it's Wine Spectator, Beck also contributes a recipe for his Not Quite Fur Season cocktail — homemade marmalade included.
