8 fresh and exciting ways to use shiplap in your home

Shiplap has surged in popularity in recent years, thanks in large part to Joanna Gaines and her well-documented love of farmhouse style. But shiplap — a board milled with a halved groove that leaves a distinctive reveal line — is nothing new. And it’s not going away, even after the current frenzy inevitably subsides. See eight ways to use this versatile material.

On one wall. Who says shiplap has to fill the entire room? Try it on the headboard wall of a bedroom with the other walls painted for contrast. If you want to use a shiplap accent wall in another space, consider using it on the wall you see when you first enter the room (for instance, the wall opposite the door in a dining room), or on the wall where you want to draw the most attention (like the one behind your sofa).

In the mudroom. A mudroom is a hardworking transitional space, but that doesn’t mean it has to lack style. Upgrade your mudroom with shiplap walls and built-in cubbies. A pair of paint-dipped stools and a striped light fixture add to the charm.

In a nook. Adding shiplap to a breakfast or dining nook makes the small space feel bright and inviting. You can use it in a space that has shiplap in the surrounding areas, but adding shiplap to the nook alone would work just as well, drawing you into the cozy corner.

In the kitchen. There’s a reason farmhouse kitchens remain consistently popular — they evoke the warmth and cheer of home comforts in a way that slick modern kitchens just can’t match. Bring a farmhouse vibe to your kitchen, even if it’s a new build, by applying crisp white shiplap to the walls. With the right finish, this material is practical and easy to clean, making it a natural choice for such a hardworking room.

Complete the Kitchen With an Iconic Farmhouse Sink

In the laundry. Looking for a way to perk up a dark, dreary laundry room? Bright white shiplap makes a cheery choice. Complete the look with a vintage-industrial-style canvas laundry basket and wall shelves to hold supplies.

New Wall Shelves for the Laundry Room

Partway up the wall. Shiplap can be used anywhere you would normally use beadboard wainscoting — in a hall, kitchen or dining room, for example.

With color. Just because shiplap is most often seen in white doesn’t mean you can’t paint it any color your heart desires. Painted shiplap looks rich with crisp white trim and wood details.

On an attic ceiling. There’s something appealingly old-fashioned about the pitched ceiling of an attic, which lends itself especially well to shiplap.

Painted Tree Boutiques closes all stores, including 6 in greater Houston

Sellers are unhappy that Painted Tree Boutiques collected rent just before closing.

Painted Tree Boutiques, a retail chain that housed hundreds of independent vendors under one roof across more than 60 locations nationwide, abruptly ceased all operations Tuesday, April 14, leaving thousands of small business owners with little warning and no clear explanation.

    It operated six Houston-area locations

    • Baybrook, 1003 W Bay Area Blvd (Webster)
    • Champions, 5407 Cypress Creek Pkwy
    • Cinco Ranch, 6729 S Fry Rd (Katy)
    • Kingwood, 1153 Kingwood Dr
    • Sugar Land, 15555 SW Fwy (Sugar Land)
    • Westchase, 10957 Westheimer Rd

The company confirmed that it is closed to the public and its last day of business was Monday, April 13. In a letter sent to shop owners, the boutique chain ordered vendors to immediately retrieve their merchandise following what it described as a sudden and permanent closure of all retail locations across the country, confirming it had stopped all business activity effective immediately and would no longer conduct retail sales at any location.

Founded in 2015, Painted Tree billed itself as a "shop small" destination, describing its concept as an "Etsy marketplace and Pinterest catalog come to life," operating large warehouse stores housing groups of independent vendors who stocked their own products and designed their own spaces.

Vendors have been given a 10-day window to remove their inventory.

"The retail landscape has changed in ways none of us could have fully anticipated," Painted Tree said in a statement. "Rising costs, shifting market conditions, and the evolving nature of how people shop have presented challenges that, despite our best efforts and our community’s unwavering support, we have not been able to overcome. We are heartbroken by this outcome."

The company was posting on social media as late as Monday night about a Ladies Night scheduled for Thursday, April 16, which has since been canceled.
