    At New York fashion week, Donna Karan goes tribal with the help of Wyclef Jean

    NEW YORK — Wyclef Jean and Donna Karan go way back. Before he was a singer, Jean worked as a security guard at a Karan factory in New Jersey. One time he fell asleep on the job and thieves stole some clothes.

    "I knew if I ever made it as a rock star I would pay her back," he recalled, from his front row seat at the Karan show.

    He got that opportunity after the earthquake devastated his home country of Haiti last year and he connected with Karan, who wanted to help the victims. She refused his offer of repayment but they established a bond.

    Karan found inspiration for her collection in tribal prints, mask totems, necklaces and wrist pieces made by Haitian artisans. The result: A collection that merges the Haitian culture with her strong, sporty aesthetic.

    As part of the Clinton Global Initiative, Karan visited the stricken country and launched a year-long series of events to raise money for earthquake relief and awareness of the depth of the problem.

    She also found the inspiration for her spring 2012 collection in the tribal prints, mask totems, necklaces and wrist pieces made by Haitian artisans. The result: A collection that merges the Haitian culture with Karan's strong, sporty aesthetic.

    Throughout the collection, Karan features strong prints in brown, black, bone and clay on stretch canvas fabrics, based on the artwork of Haitian artist Phillipe Dodoar. "Tribal tech" accessories include hand-carved platform wedges and giant necklaces made of shards of wood and lucite, based on mask totems.

    It made for a strong, if sometimes repetitive, point of view. To offer her customer a little more variety, Karan added several of the body hugging dresses she is known for in an electric violet color and citrus shades. The bold colors really popped out amid the prints.

    "To see this line is like an epiphany to me. It's exciting. It's sexy. It's daring. It's fun," John said after viewing the collection. "I want people to know there's a sexy side to our ladies. This is just the start of it."

    Also on hand was Sheridan Williams who flew up from Houston for the show. Williams is among a handful of Donna Karan Ambassadors selected from across the United States for their stylish philanthropy and was seated in a prominent row just behind W magazine editor Stefano Tonchi and his crew.

    Houston's premier boys clothing boutique opens new home in Rice Village

    Boys are welcome to read the books on the shelves.

    Houston’s premier boys-only boutique now has a permanent home in Rice Village. ParkerJoe, which offers clothing, accessories, and lifestyle brands that takes lads from wee tykes to pre-adolescent (in sizes newborn to 16), originally opened last year in a temporary spot in the River Oaks Shopping Center.

    Now open at 5515 Kelvin Dr., Suite 95, the store unfolds across 1,900 square feet, all of it stocked with the retailer’s carefully curated inventory that embraces all kinds of boys and all types of occasions. Families will find looks that range from formal and preppy to sporty and casual, with brands such as Bailey Boys, Classic Prep, Saltwater Boys, and Appaman as well as local brands like Sunnies, which specializes in polarized sunglasses for children, and onesies from Houston children’s apparel purveyor Oink Moo.

    “We wanted to create a place where boys are seen and heard,” said Lisa Hostler, who owns the store with her daughter Chelsea. “Their needs and their wants are represented at ParkerJoe.”

    Hostler is excited to be in the Rice Village spot, an affluent area known for its walkability and attractiveness for families, which make it an ideal location for a niche retailer like ParkerJoe.

    “It’s a younger population and a strong retail mix,” she said. “We couldn’t be happier here in a center that has welcomed us so warmly and made us feel at home.”

    The store itself is designed to help boys enjoy the sometimes awkward process of shopping for new clothes. Towards that end, they are welcome to touch and play with toys on the shelves, which are stocked with books, games, and stuffed animals.

    An official grand opening is planned for September, but prior to that customers can expect a summer of events including trunk shows, a fashion show, and an influencer brunch.

    Even as Lisa and Chelsea are excited to be in Rice Village, they are setting their sights on continued expansion. They currently have a temporary outpost in Memorial City Mall, and are looking for retail locations in other Houston neighborhoods, with a desire to open across Texas.

    ParkerJoe in Rice Village is open Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 7 pm and Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm.
