Shopping odds and ends:
Silver Lining at Rebecca & Drew
If you’ve been looking for a silver lining in this whole recession mess, there’s good news from Lindsay Aronstein, owner of Rebecca & Drew in River Oaks Shopping Center. Her genius selection of buttondown shirts are sized by bra size, height and body shape, come in colors ideal for the office and beyond and are now priced at $85. The close-to-custom shirts have been upwards of $185, so the new pricing gives you a chance to buy two for the original price of one. Rebbeca & Drew also carries dresses and tunics designed with the same TrioFit technology.
Fun for girls and boys
This is the time of year the cute clothes in your closet live for. There’s no shortage of parties, fundraisers, shopping events and all-around good times and the coming days are no exception. It generally goes without saying that most of the events hosted by Women of Wardrobe, the young professional arm of Dress for Success, are heavy on the estrogen. After all, the organization works to empower women to get back in the workforce with skills and outfits that instill confidence, but the annual February Fling goes against type. Boys are allowed at the event Saturday at Social Lounge and Patio Bar for beer, bites, ping pong tournaments, washer boards, a raffle and freshly rolled cigars. The WOW volunteers ask for a $40 donation at the door and proceeds benefit Dress for Success. The co-ed soiree starts at 3 p.m.
Of course, if you do want a girl’s only event, perhaps the Sip and Shop at the Belle Meade at River Oaks will do. The shopping party is Wednesday (Feb 10) from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and women will find shopping and beauty, wine, sweet treats, live music and the current hottest party accessory, a photo booth. Tickets are $20.
Before the Super Bowl, Shopping
If it’s couches, not clothing you need, the Urban Market is raising its tents Sunday in the the Knights of Columbus Fields near the Heights. Held just three times a year, the Urban Market is a favorite for inspired decorators, professional interior designers and an all-around good time. Antiques, home accessories, garden goodies and some of the area’s favorite foods (The Houston Dairy Maids, Janice Schindeler’s pimento cheese) are among the treasures sold at the market. Tickets are $5 and the market is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. just in time to hit all those Super Bowl parties.
Chloe Dao Plays Fairy Godmother
Our favorite Project Runway winner Chloe Dao is always so good about supporting charities, so it’s no surprise she is throwing her support behind the Fairy Godmother Project, an organization that donates evening gowns and accessories to high school girls who otherwise couldn’t afford them. Lot 8, Dao’s Rice Village Boutique, is collecting evening gowns, cocktail and casual dresses and accessories for the charity and is giving those who donate something in return. Give a gown, get a $20 coupon, give a dress appropriate for a banquet and get a $10 coupon, or donate shoes, handbags or accessories and receive a $5 coupon. The coupons are good through Feb. 28.
