Charming movie star John Cusack hosts screening and discussion of his anti rom-com classic in Houston
Movie debate: Is the John Cusack/Jack Black vehicle High Fidelitya rom-com, or actually an anti rom-com? Cusack, who plays a self-centered, arrogant womanizer in the film, helped bend rules of the movies by breaking the Fourth Wall (speaking directly to the audience) and making a jerk relatable.
With hope, such topics will come up when movie star/director/producer Cusack visits Houston to host a screening and discussion of High Fidelity on Sunday, June 25 at 713 Music Hall.
General tickets for An Evening with John Cusack go on sale at 10 am Friday, April 21 at 10 am through Ticketmaster.com. More details and a venue map can be found here.
Hailed as one of Cusack's best films (an impressive list, indeed), High Fidelity finds Cusack as a Rob Gordon, a record store owner who laments his romantic failures. Before listicles became a thing, Rob comically ranks his top five breakups — including his current one — while engaging with the audience and interacting with a terrific cast that includes Jack Black and Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Tim Robbins.
Speaking of Robbins, his New Age character/new boyfriend of Rob's love interest Laura is the recipient of arguably the film's greatest line: "Get yourpatchouli stink out of my store!" Rob yells at him — all in a fantasy sequence, of course.
Here's hoping Cusack will touch on his storied career at the screening/discussion. He was just getting his start in Hollywood when he scored the supporting part of Bryce in 1984's Sixteen Candles, serving mostly as a sidekick to Anthony Michael Hall's character. He had established himself as a leading man by the end of the decade when he tried to woo Ione Skye in Cameron Crowe's 1989 classic, Say Anything.
Hailing from a gifted acting family — his older sister Joan is an audience-favorite character actor — Cusack has starred in a wide range of dramas, thrillers, and comedies, including The Grifters, Eight Men Out, Being John Malkovich, High Fidelity, and Grosse Pointe Blank over 40 years. He was most recently seen in the Amazon sci-fi series Utopia.
