Can't wait till September
The Houston Ballet's new dancers bring global power
Next week, when the Houston Ballet reconvenes for the 2010-2011 season, it will be slightly different dance deck. Several dancers have been added to the roster, while others have moved up the ranks. It happens every year, and I can't deny a certain excitement about meeting the newcomers.
When the season opens on September 9 all eyes will be on Shanghai native Junshuang Huang, who joins the company as the newest principal dancer. Huang won gold at the Helsinki International Ballet Competition in Finland in 2009 and has held the rank of principal at Guangzhou Ballet Theater since 2007.
“Huang has a very strong classical technique with a beautiful foundation," Stanton Welch, Houston Ballet's artistic director, says. "He has both the attributes of a lyrical dancer and a virtuoso dancer as well as being a strong and caring partner."
I am thrilled to hear that Melissa Hough will be a new soloist. Hough, formerly of Boston Ballet, has always been a standout. Known for her extreme versatility, Hough looks at home whether she's dancing contemporary or classical rep. Her bling chest includes a bronze medal winner in the 2005 Helsinki International Ballet Competition and a jury award of merit winner from the Jackson International Ballet Competition in 2002.
Welch first choreographed Hough at BalletMet when she was in her teens. “Melissa is a strong, intelligent, athletic and brave dancer," he says “Seeing Melissa again was a reminder of how focused and detail oriented she is as a dancer. She is a remarkable dancer with impressive technique."
Also joining her in the soloist rank is Karina Gonzalez, a former principal with Tulsa Ballet . A native of Caracas, Venezuela, Gonzalez is a silver medal winner of the New York International Ballet Competition in 2007.
"She is a sensual, feminine, powerful, and extremely passionate dancer,” Welch says. “Dance comes to her naturally, almost innately. She has the indefinable 'it' factor which makes a magnificent ballerina.”
Jamaican native Rupert Edwards III is the newest corps de ballet addition, while apprentices William Newton, Garrett Smith, Megumi Takeda, and Natalie Varnum have moved up to be full-fledged members of the corps de ballet. Academy graduates Beth Miller, Madison Morris, Aaron Sharratt and Liao Xiang will apprentice. Sharrott and Xiang were both finalists in the 2010 Prix du Lausanne.
