plastic burns
Mysterious fire creates huge smoke clouds, scares drivers and makes a cablecompany move fast
A thick, black haze brought the Southwest Freeway to a halt Thursday afternoon, as firefighters battled a small-but-smoky blaze at a construction site west of Greenway Plaza.
Shortly after 2 p.m., the Houston Fire Department (HFD) responded to a fire that ignited a wooden fence between a private residence and the former Twelve Oaks Hospital building, which currently is under renovation.
While the blaze roared long enough to destroy the fence and a nearby tree, firefighters had the incident contained in less than 15 minutes.
"I was leaving the neighborhood after hanging campaign signs for [state representative] Sarah Davis," says Karl Muench, president of the Wesleyan Plaza #2 subdivision bordering the old hospital. "I saw all of this smoke in my rear view mirror and quickly turned around." He saw flames behind 3726 Las Palmas.
"There was a lot of PVC pipe leaning against the fence," HFD public information officer Jay Evans tells CultureMap. "We surmise that maybe some of the workers were using that area during their breaks.
"Someone may have dropped a cigarette and caught the plastic on fire. We don't know for sure, though."
While the blaze roared long enough to destroy the fence and a nearby tree, firefighters had the incident contained in less than 15 minutes. No injuries were reported.
Fast-acting Comcast employees were on the scene by 3 p.m. to restore Xfinity service to Wesleyan Plaza . . . phew, close call.
