A blaze of glory: Houston's John Wayne firefighter still helping kids six yearsafter his death
When you fashion a life around being a shining example of courage, it comes as no surprise that your lasting impact would be the subject of idolatry as well.
Although Red Adair, the native Houstonian hailed for oilfield firefighting heroics, has been deceased since 2004, the lingering lionheart of his legacy is alive and fighting near Sealy to this day.
Except this time, it's his granddaughter, Sunny Adair, stoking the family flame. She's conducting a public auction at 10 a.m. Saturday at his Red Acres Ranch, giving you the chance to own some Texas tea memorabilia of your very own.
"We have old oilfield photos, and even John Wayne's rifle and pocket knife," Sunny told CultureMap in a phone interview about the novelties up for grabs. Relics rounding out the brigade include antique firefighting helmets, family fripperies, and even the original script to John Wayne's Hellfighters, the movie based on Red.
But the money collected from the auction isn't for the sake of filling the Adair coffers. Following a stop at the Shriners Hospitals for Children in Galveston, Sunny decided to honor her grandfather's memory by donating a portion of the proceeds to the pediatric burn hospital.
"A friend told me that Shriners Hospital had problems rebuilding after Hurricane Ike," Sunny said. "Since my grandfather, being in the oil firefighting business, was always dealing with burn issues, it was an important cause to our family."
Sunny said, "We're very involved with charities, especially children's charities, and we aim for a continued relationship with the Shriners in the future."
With hearts on fire, there's no way Red Adair wouldn't be pleased with this tribute to his life and career. So get 'er on up to the Red ranch and throw a few pennies in the hat, d'ya hear?
