Business icon recovers
Mattress Mack bounces back from heart surgery with love from fans — and a former president
Houston business legend Jim McIngvale — known best as Mattress Mack — says he hopes to be back at work as soon as possible after undergoing surgery at St. Luke's Texas Heart Institute on Thursday.
While his medical procedure proved fairly routine, the boisterous Gallery Furniture owner is surely no run of the mill patient . . . At least according to a Friday afternoon comment he posted to his nearly 15,000 Facebook followers:
Just got a call from President George H.W. Bush wishing me well. He's the greatest, couldn't be more blessed to know him. Thank you for all of your support. Proud to be an American."
McIngvale tells KHOU Channel 11 that a recent series of tests revealed his heart was leaking small amounts of blood. Though not uncommon, even a minor breach can lead to strokes if untreated.
"I've been having this numbness in my face and it seems I may have had a mini-stroke or two," he explains to reporters from his hospital bed.
The 62-year-old Bayou City icon — whose over-the-top TV ads for Gallery Furniture have entertained Houstonians for three decades — says his experience at St. Luke's has been tops. Nevertheless, he's hoping a deal on new mattress can convince doctors to give him an early release.
Once he returns to his feet, McIngvale is expected to return to his efforts to secure a SXSW speaking engagement.
