Community leader is mourned
James A. Elkins III dies of apparent heart attack in France
The Houston business and philanthropic community is mourning the loss of James A. Elkins III who died unexpectedly of an apparent heart attack while on vacation in France Thursday. He was 58.
A third-generation Houstonian whose family was instrumental in the growth of the nation's fourth largest city, Elkins co-founded Houston Trust Company and was chairman at the time of his death.
He served on the boards of many non-profit organizations, including the Children's Museum of Houston, the Houston Museum of Natural Science, the Houston Parks Board, the Houston Zoo, Methodist Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine. He was chairman of the board of the St. John's School from 1998-2004, trustee at Rice University from 1980-2006 and served as trustee for the Vivian L. Smith Foundation and the Wortham Foundation.
Community involvement has been an Elkins family tradition. Elkins' grandfather founded the Vinson & Elkins law firm and First City National Bank and was one of Houston's most formidable business leaders in its formative years. His father, James A. Elkins Jr., was chairman of First City and one of the original benefactors of the Menil Collection.
Elkins is survived by his wife, Jenny, and seven children.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church. Geo. H. Lewis & Sons funeral home is handling arrangements.
