CultureMap's own Nic Phillips was one of the 300,000 people scooping up iPads Saturday, and he so far has only one major complaint: The darn thing's case is upside-down.
Many of the iPad's apps (1,000 went on sale Saturday and another 150,000 existing iPhone apps run on the iPad) are designed only to operate in the landscape orientation. So, even though the iPad is able to rotate whichever way you turn it, when propped up in its case, the apps that can't rotate are ... upside-down.
And the volume control is in an inconvenient spot, too. You've got to pick the thing up and practically flip it over to get to the button.
For a company famous for its perfectionism and attention to detail, the case is a major ball drop. Maybe the next model — which we hope incorporates much of what Apple seems to have deliberately left out — will come with a better carrying case.
Until then, we'll stick to our iMaxi.
